Phylum Arthropoda is by far the largest phylum in the Kingdom Animalia, as it includes at least 75% of all animal species. The most popular members of this phylum are the insects, although it includes arachnids, crustaceans and others. This web site focuses on four groups of arthropods: amphipods, copepods, ostracods and cladocerans. The exact classification of these groups varies from text to text, so for the purposes of this class, Cladocerans, Ostracods and Copepods are all classes (Class Clodocera, Class Ostracoda, and Class Copepoda, respectively) while Amphipods are an order (Order Amphipoda) in the Class Malecostraca (same as crabs, lobsters, and shrimp). |
