"The King of Yesterday and Tomorrow" takes place during the Ching dynasty when Ngan Chan (Kong Wah) is the emperor. He decides to go out on a trip to check out how the country is doing. Ngan Chan (Kong Wah) encounters Lu Tu Nuong (Maggie Cheung) being bullied by a lot of people because she was accused of owing them money. Ngan Chan (Kong Wah) decides to help her out. Lu Tu Nuong (Maggie Cheung) decides that because Ngan Chan (Kong Wah) helped her out that she would follow him and serve him. When they get by the harbour, the same people that bullied Lu Tu Nuong (Maggie Cheung) started to attack Ngan Chan (Kong Wah) and his guards. Ngan Chan (Kong Wah) clues that Lu Tu Nuong (Maggie Cheung) is in this whole thing, too. The guards fight off the attackers, as the boat sets sail with Ngan Chan (Kong Wah) and Lu Tu Nuong (Maggie Cheung). The boat gets sucked into a tornado and Ngan Chan (Kong Wah) and Lu Tu Nuong (Maggie Cheung) are accidentally transported 200 years into the future and into modern day Hong Kong.

While there was a bus accident, a lot of people landed into the hospital. Ngan Chan (Kong Wah) and Lu Tu Nuong (Maggie Cheung) also landed in there. Ngan Chan (Kong Wah) takes the identity of Ly Dai Ha, who has died of the accident and so Ngan Chan (Kong Wah) is taken in by Ly Dai Ha's uncle and family. Nobody notices any difference between Ngan Chan (Kong Wah) and Ly Dai Ha since they look just alike. On the other hand, Lu Tu Nuong (Maggie Cheung) follows a martial arts performing troupe. All that she really thinks of in mind is to find Ngan Chan (Kong Wah) and kill him.

Through a series of events, Lu Tu Nuon decides to not kill Ly Dai Ha anymore. Lu Tu Nuong (Maggie Cheung) lives in the same house with Ly Dai Ha's family and start to get closer and closer. Ly Dai Ha joins an interior design/property development company and comes into contact with the family who owns and runs the business. Lu Tu Nuong (Maggie Cheung) also ends up being the bodyguard of the owner of the company. The two of them get embroiled in the family's affair. Mr. Sum has a hard time deciding who he will give the company to. More and more things start to go on. The brothers do anything to get their father's attention. Frankie and Ly Dai Ha once worked together, but everyone always thought that if Ly Dai Ha (Kong Wah) hadn't helped Frankie then he wouldn't be able to do it by himself. Frankie starts to get evil and does anything to show that he doesn't need Ly Dai Ha.

Later, Frankie finds out that Ly Dai Ha (Kong Wah) and Lu Tu Nuong (Maggie Cheung) are from 200 years before. He starts to find evidence to prove it and make everyone go search for them. He wants them to open both of them up like animals and observe them. He thought that his family would still be on his side, but they don't. They help Ngan Chan (Kong Wah) and Lu Tu Nuong (Maggie Cheung) hide away. At the end, Frankie goes mental.

Then comes the love triangle between Ly Dai Ha (Kong Wah), Lu Tu Nuong (Maggie Cheung), and Rachel (Melissa Ng). Melissa starts to notice that she is as perfect for Ly Dai Ha (Kong Wah) as Lu Tu Nuong (Maggie Cheung). Plus, Frankie was trying to harm them. So she decides to let Ly Dai Ha (Kong Wah) and Lu Tu Nuong (Maggie Cheung) live together. Both of them go to a faraway place to live, while aslo trying to get away from the reporters and the place.
