SParker's Home Improvement Page
Desciption:
We purchased our home in 1997. It's a 1940's Cape Cod, with some major improvements made before we bought the house. Following is the approximate set of improvements made above and beyond the typical for the neighborhood:
Sometime within 15yrs? of house being built: bump out back 2nd floor;
Sometime after 15yrs begin built: Add 12x16 family room addition out back, adjacent to kitchen. Place mirror in tiny BA, make kitchen rear window a pass-through;
Owner before us: Add 15x15' deck off 3rd BR, open hole in Living Room to 3rd BR, Add french doors between MBR and little room.
When we first moved in we did a lot of work on the house:
Paint basement walls;
Remove wallpaper from 5? rooms;
Build dog-washing-stand in basement;
Install crown molding in DR;
Landscaping;
Remove metal shed, and 2 concrete pads
Build wood shed;
Repair back fence;
Replace most facia boards/gutters;
Then like psychos with nothing better to do, we started rebuilding the kitchen when my wife got pregnant with the first kid: (This is ~Jan 2000)
Replace all appliances;
Remove wall between kitchen and Hall, build island;
Build all cabinets/drawers from scratch, island counter top;
Remove 2 floors, install Pergo;
Build garden window;
Move stove 4' to under window.
Then, again with nothing better to do (and a <2yr old running around) we decided to add onto the back! (This is ~Dec 2001)
Remove 12x16 FR;
Remove Deck;
Replace all windows;
Replace roof;
Resheath exterior, add insulation  (therefore replace all siding);
Add ~550 sq ft, FR, MBR (FR is in same loc as old FR, MBR is where deck was);
Create MBA from old Den;
Install direct-vent Heat/AC
Install direct-vent waterheater;
Remove Chimney (we had no fireplace!)
Landscaping;
Build arbor;
New electrical service;
