Mary Lambie: How are ya?
All: good.
Mary :ya comfy up there
Ben?
Ben: yeah I feel a bit bad
having my feet on the couch
Mary: oh, you’re a good
Canterbury lad aint ya?
Now I thought the best way
of approaching this, is collectively you are zed, but lets just go bang
bang bang introduce yourselves and tell us a bit about yourself. Start
with you Ben
Ben: right, now I’m ben
I’m from christchurch, I’m 19, and I’m a musician, bass player in zed,
uh, a couple of years out of high school, um, 7th form did bursary and
spent a year in jazz course at polytech in chch. But now a full time zed
boy
Mary: Wonderful, nathan?
Nathan: yes, nathan, um,
21, went to cashmere as well with ben and adrian here, and spent 3 years
at canterbury uni doing civil engineering which is a far cry from what
I’m doing now. But uh, still enjoyable, it was good. And it was good preparation
in some ways for the fun we can have now.
Mary: ok, now what instrument
do you play?
Nathan: play guitar and
sing
Mary: now you gonna finish
ya degree?
Nathan: one day I will
Mary: well you got roughly
1-2 years to go…
Nathan: 1 to go, 4 yr degree
Mary: now moving along,
Adrian
Adrian: ok, adrian, I’m
21 likewise went to canterbury for 3 years, but finished my bSC, just luck
of the draw, but I always wanted to be a roadpainter when I was young
Mary: a what?!
Adrian :a road painter
Mary: oh you do those masterful
things on the footpath
Adrian: i always painted
the driveway w/ chalk and stuff like that. But now I have to be a drummer
Nathan: he’s gonna do the
white lines on the road
All: hahaha
Mary: didn’t one of you,
I’ll get to you andy in a momment, I promise, didn’t one of you want to
be a pilot?
Ben: Andy is a pilot.
Mary: oh sorry andy I’ve
just sort of pre-emted you.
Andy :all right, I’m andy,
um I’m 21, I went to music school in los angeles, california, for a few
months, that was cool, eye opener, no one actually lives in hollywood thats
famous.
Mary: is that a fact?
Andy: it’s all a big hush
Mary: so where do they all
live?
Andy: uh, malibu
Mary: the hills
Andy: the hills, yeah, not
the hollywood hills I’m the newest addition to zed so still putting my
feet on the ground. I’m the gimp
All: hahaha
Adrian: You said it!
Andy: y’know, if there’s
a room to be shared, I get the room to be shared w/. but it’s all good.
Mary :now tell me about
your famous mother
Andy :my famous mother,
oh yes, um.
Mary: oh yes
Andy: well she’s appeared
here before a few times,
Mary: and she is?
Andy: she is famous, she
is my mum, and she’s lovely
Mary: does she have a name?
Andy: Suzanne Lynch
Mary: Suzanne lynch, the
chicks, of course! Did you do a bit of this business? (does a funky dance)
Andy : uhh, no. Ray could
teach it to us
All: yeah
Mary: now, ray, is your
manager, where is ray? Is he still in bed?
Ben: he must be yeah.
Adrian: he’s bringing the
stuff. He’s our roadie/manager
Mary: so when did he pick
you up, when did he say ‘you look like a talented bunch of guys I’m gonna
run w/you’?
Nathan: 1996 we were still
at high school.
Mary: so how did you get
discovered?
Ben: it was actually through
my dad, I’m actually rays godson, which uh, ray was my dads manager along
w/ andys mum manager back in the 70s and 80s, unfortunately my dad didn’t
have the success that ray wanted and my dad wanted, and I think, sort of
moved from there, dad building up the contacts and ray building up the
contacts, and they heard a tape of early zed demos, when we were called
supra, over four yearrs ago now, and um, he really liked them.
Mary: how important is it
to have a really switched on manager, I mean can ray take you places that
you could take yourselves?
All: yup
Adrian: someone w/ the business
knowledge
Nathan: the whole business
side of things, we’re learning but we wouldn’t want to have to try to deal
w/that ourselves right now
Mary: yeah cause you’ve
got an average age of 20…
Andy: the music would suffer.
Mary: (pulls a weird facial)
oh do you think? So you’re focused on the music, ray will get you gigs.
Adrian: we like to know
what’s going on. But we’re not totally business savvy
Mary: ok, 5 years down the
track, where do you want to be?
Adrian: painting roads!
All:laugh
Mary: and the others?
Ben: world domination.
Nathan: we’ll get a drum
machine, and kick him out and be over seas, definitely. 3rd album by then?
Ben: 3rd 4thalbum.
Mary: so you’re dedicated
to the cause, you want to be pop stars, sorry music stars. Rock stars.
Nathan: put NZ back on the
map.
Mary: hey, well done, it’s
neat to have you on the show.
Then they played the acoustic
version of ‘renegade fighter’ which mary lambie liked better than the real
version and said how lovely they were.
Where's the KABOOM?! There was supposed to be an earth shattering KABOOM!!
