ZM: hi guys, how ya doing
Nathan: good thanks
ZM: you’ve almost got a
bit of a sweat up, you have been working previously to this? Haven’t ya.
Nathan: yeah we’re doing
a big barbeque for Andy’s parents (or maybe he said they had a big barbeque
at Andy’s parents)
ZM: now I know you’re into
a bit of curry aren’t ya
Adrian: oh yeah, the old
Indian
Nathan: yeah Indian
Adrian: we died actually
last time we were up here, when we were on tour, we had an Indian that
was so hot we nearly couldn’t play.
Nathan: Auckland Indian
is definitely hotter than Christchurch Indian.
ZM that’s right cos I spoke
to you the night before the gig Adrian and you said you were having a shower
Nathan: sweating too much
ZM: lets just do a bit of
a recap, you’ve done the tour
Nathan: yeah, heaps of fun
ZM: was there a, there’s
one story lets get it out of the way, one trip the guy came and took your
clothes and wallets in Napier
Nathan: oh yeah
ZM: what’s going on there,
what happened
Nathan: Age, explain
Adrian: yeah, bad security
backstage, guys got backstage while we were playing rummaged through our
bags, steals all our stuff *fakes crying*
ZM: really?
Nathan and Adrian: Yeah
Nathan: one of our techs
tried tackling a guy and that kinda worked, but they eventually escaped
ZM: they escaped, they’re
still running loose
Nathan: yeah in Napier somewhere
ZM: so that was the low
point of the tour?
Nathan: that was the low
point of the tour actually
ZM: so what about some of
the good things of the tour
Adrian: the size of the
crowds was good.
Nathan: yah
ZM: so Invercargill started
it they rung me up, started the buzz, and Christchurch is always gonna
say you played the best there
Nathan: for sure, nah Christchurch
was really fun, everyone was really hyped
ZM: and I heard Andy really
enjoyed Auckland and quite surprised with the Auckland people as well ya
know just went crazy. I sent a lady friend of mine, and she’s decided Nathan,
that you’re better than me
Nathan: sorry dude
ZM: its rough, so how are
you coping with that, cos you’ve obviously made a hell of a lot more fans
than were already there
Nathan: yeah, Adrian I’d
like you to answer that as well
Adrian: yes, we’ve made
more fans than were there.
ZM: well before, they’ve
actually followed you around. I’ve got people who have actually been to
three of your concerts they travelled up from Invercargill to Christchurch
Adrian: yeah yeah, someone
rung up on a cellphone from Christchurch to listen to Palmerston north
Nathan: yeah that’s right
Adrian: and I said why don’t
you just fly up and watch it, it would be cheaper
Nathan: but they listened
to the whole thing on the cellphone
Adrian: but good on ya anyway
Nathan: yeah thank you
ZM : yeah, that’s what they’re
doing for/to you. No-one knocking on your door waiting for you to come
outside.
Nathan: yeah we get a bit
of that actually. There’s a few regulars. That um
Adrian: my cars so recognisable
now everyone’s just like - (I assume he pointed or pulled some face, however
the effect was lost over the radio)
Nathan: they’ve figured
out a ways to see into my bedroom from this public area and I have to make
sure the blinds are closed, that’s for sure.
ZM: lets talk about why
you are here, you guys have got a bit of a big weekend again
Nathan: yeah
Adrian: well first I’m doing
this join-the-dots thing here that I’m making. Its a monkey
Nathan: nice, I like it
Adrian :you like it
Nathan yeah.
ZM: let me have a look at
it
Adrian: that’s the tail
that im doing now. Its gonna be a monkey
ZM: well you carry on there
Nathan: we’re gonna be playing
with Blink 182 and tadpole, which is gonna be cool
ZM cool? Just cool
Adrian: its gonna be wild
ZM: I hope you guys like
words like ‘weaners’
Adrian: yeah (they rattle
off a few words)
ZM: you don’t mind those
sorts of words?
Nathan: we can cope with
them
Adrian: we can cope with
them
ZM: stick around cos now my phones are ringing, and I know one of you guys are having a birthday and some other stuff maybe we can find your wallet and cd player along the way.
ZM: you know Killing Heidi?
Adrian: I don’t know them
personally but I’ve heard of them they’re playing at the big day out
ZM: yeah they’re coming
over here for lunch I think. Nah their album’s coming out and they’re going
to try and flog it off there, its kinda the toast of Australia. When are
you guys going to Australia?
Nathan: next year
ZM: next year? That will
be good
Nathan: February, march
ZM: more ladies
Nathan: well ya know
ZM: you’re too modest, was
it hard when you’re album went gold and your single went what number 4
Nathan: yeah number 4
ZM: that’s the best spot
for one of your singles?
Adrian: yep
ZM: but how do you keep
your brains about you then
Nathan: you do have a bit
of a blow-out ya know ya have a bit of fun but then you become serious
again.
ZM: back to business, then
you realise you’ve got to play again in the weekend and you‘ve got to rehearse
again. No one’s told me about the new song. Who wrote it, what’s it about.
Cos normally we get the low down on you guys but this song sorta just,
Renegade Fighter then bang you’ve got another one out there
Adrian: it slipped out of
the bag
Nathan: Come on Down um,
written by me, its just
ZM: what’s it about
Nathan: I honestly can’t
say
Adrian: since he wrote it
I’ll tell you what its about.
Nathan: you don’t even know
do you
Adrian: nah I don’t even
know.
ZM: Adrian generally knows
more is that why you come along, you’re the wealth of knowledge.
Nathan: hang on, that means
I’m generally not as smart?
ZM: and Adrian’s an artist,
I can see the picture he’s just drawn
Adrian: its a monkey. I
don’t know what its about. But its quite deep isn’t it? It feels deep
Nathan: its quite serious,
its got meaning behind it. But it is very personal to me, so you know.
There are some things that you just can’t tell about.
ZM: okay. When’s the video
happening. Have you made it?
Nathan: yeah we’ve made
the video (laughs)
ZM: what’s everyone smiling
for
Nathan: its really good
Adrian: its a surprise
ZM: is it good, your not
gonna tell me anything about it
Adrian: I’m gonna press
this dump button if you ask about the video again
ZM: when can we see the
video on TV
Nathan: in about two weeks
Adrian: two weeks (grrr.
I’m going away in 2 ½ weeks, it better be on before I leave!!)
ZM: I also heard there’s
a documentary?
Nathan: yeah when we were
on tour there was a production company that followed us around
Adrian I saw a bit of that
today actually it looked quite good. You may be on there - the listener
then they talk to the ZM guy about him being their voice over and stuff
ZM: I wanna know after the
blink thing, when are you having a break, cos I though after the tour you
were resting.
Nathan: December will be
a bit of a break
Adrian: we’ve had a couple
of weeks off
Nathan: Andy’s been real
busy, he’s been helping produce a guy from Australia. Just honing up his
engineering skills in his studio but that’s been good for him. But we’ve
just been writing and lying low.
ZM: Oh writing?
Nathan. Oh, yes, always
writing.
ZM: what have you been writing
Nathan: writing a few little
songs there. Ben’s been writing some good ones as well so I’m quite stoked
with him, I’m quite proud of him actually.
ZM: are ya
Nathan: yes, he’s doing
well
ZM: and you guys didn’t
have a fall out at all?
Nathan: no
Adrian: did you hear about
one
ZM: nah, just making sure
Nathan: nah, its been pretty
cruisy
ZM: how come you guys take
your shirts off now? Or was that only Andy
Adrian: it was medical advice
for the tour
Nathan: when you get hot
you do need to
Adrian: cos hypothermia
can set in
ZM: I just thought maybe
you did it once, got a good response and thought hang on we gotta keep
this take the shirt off part of the show ya know
Nathan: the support band
Heavy Jones Trio thought it was a funny idea to come on the stage and ask
people who thought we should take our tops off
Adrian: and if you take
your tops off then, by the time you finish the show they’re dry so you
can wear them after.
Nathan: you can put them
back on and go out
ZM: so there is some kind
a logic. I heard you guys are friend with the other group
Nathan and Adrian: yeah
ZM: I hear good things about
them too
Adrian: you will hear more.
ZM: will we
Nathan: yeah
ZM: Before we go and say
our goodbyes, I had a lot of emails, a lot of faxes about birthday boy
in the weekend.
Nathan: yes that’s Ben
ZM: now you just pulled
out a little statistic, do you want to repeat that
Nathan: well I was just
thinking about it on November 4 that’s it for us in the terms of teenagers,
they’ll be no more teenagers in the band, cos Ben’s turning 20.
ZM? Ben’s the youngest?
You wouldn’t predict that. I bet everyone thinks Andy’s the youngest.
Nathan: yeah they do
ZM: and I bet Andy’s sick
of being called cute
Nathan: a little bit, he
is cute though!
ZM: or does he milk it
Nathan: he probably does
actually
Adrian: If you want to celebrate
Ben’s birthday its BBB Ben, Birthday, Blink 182, that’s where the party
is.
ZM: his birthdays’ actually
on?
Adrian: same night
ZM are you guys gonna make
a meal of that to the crowd?
Nathan: oh yeah! We’ll be
singing ‘happy birthday’ even if he doesn’t want us to
ZM: that’s good, that’s
good actually we just heard Travis and it was his birthday the day before
they played here and the crowd just broke into ‘happy birthday’
Nathan: yeah I was there,
I helped out
ZM: well I’m gonna be there
on Saturday and I’m bringing my lady friend and I’ve been told to warn
you.
Nathan: I’m interested in
meeting this lady
ZM: just watch out cos I’m
gonna bring a couple of big guys with me
Nathan OK alright., but
you’re big enough
ZM: I’m liking your haircut
Adrian. Good lucky for Saturday
um, do I thin it would improve
my se- I don't really have a sex life right now
