1999 Alero

The all new Oldsmobile Alero was shown for the first time at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The new car which is available as a two door coupe of a four door sedan will go on sale in North America in the third quarter of 1998 (Late Summer/Early Fall). Oldsmobile is hoping for big things from this small car. They are hoping that it becomes the division's best selling car by the time the Cutlass is dropped from the lineup next year. The car, which will be available in three trim levels should be priced between $15,000 for the base model and $23,000 for a loaded GLS, although pricing has not yet been finalized. The car will have a 2.4L DOHC 4-cylinder engine as standard equipment and a 3.4 liter V6 making 170 horsepower will be optional. For '99 all
Alero's will feature an automatic transmission but for the 2000 model year a manual will be offered with the four cylinder. Oldsmobile also claims to have class leading luggage room. Here is an interesting fact: The Alero will share its door design with the Pontiac Grand Am. The clean unadorned
look of the Olds will be covered by heavy lower cladding on the Pontiac. Sounds to me like Pontiac got the short end of the stick on that deal.
