Shooting stars from the Red Planet!

We see them in the night sky, but isn’t it surprising that we may be sometime ‘wishing’ before rocks from Mars? That’s right. They are able to identify 2 dozens of these ‘meteorites from mars’ among a collection of ~20,000!

This is how they do it:

1. Concentrations of gases measured in the inclusion in a meteorite (EET 79001) collected from Antarctica match those measured in martian atmosphere as measured by the Viking missions.

2. They also use many chemical and isotopic signatures to identify these meteorites.

3. Finally one uses the correlation between a known martian meteorite with a new one.
