*.zip Files & Winzip
Well... you may have to get a couple programs, but it's not like they are the rarest file formats on the web. Almost all of the larger files available on this site have been compressed using a program called Winzip. This allows you to download faster, and saves you time for actually using the files. However, if you don't have Winzip, you will have a difficult time decompressing the archives (noted by *.zip). Not to worry, it's available free at their web site.
*.pdf Files & Adobe PDF Reader
The second file format that may present a problem is *.pdf, or portable document format. But just like Winzip, you can get a reader that will allow you to view and print these files whenever you like, and like Winzip, it is also free. Simply go to Adobe's web site, fill out the form, and download like crazy. Other than the above two, the majority of files on the site are saved in a format common to Windows.
A Note on Printing
I used to have a big blurb about word-wrap and text files here, but since the site overhaul I've done away with the text files. Instead the content (everything that isn't part of the menu system) has been reformatted into printer friendly html documents. I tested the files on a black & white laser printer in both Internet Explorer 5.5 and Netscape Navigator 6.1 with 0.75 inch margins all around. I'm hoping this improves quality for anyone else who wants to print content off the site.
