Saturday I started at the zoo. Spent the day trimming back
ornamental grasses.
Saturday night we went to the SCA Mead Bee Wars. The wars
were over and we got there as the feast was finishing. Beth &
Sue & Del went around saying hellos and I was introduced
to a lot of people I had only heard about.
We sat outside and listened to harp music while they held
court inside.
Finally the dancing started. I was sore from trimming grasses
to dance so I didn't warm up since I didn't plan on dancing.
But eventually there were enough dancers for me to get lost in
the middle of them and Del took my hand and dragged me in. Some
women were dressed in dance costume, others were dresses as their
SCA persona. There were about 30 drummers and 20 dancers. The
mood was festive, bottles and tankards being passed around, guys
leaning on staffs from the days injuries. A few bulbs did their
best to beat back the dark and the large number of bodies and
dancing kept the place warm. The place was in a pavillion that
had peices of cloth hung for walls and scarves hung from the
beams. Just a few rugs were on the bare concrete floor and how
some girls danced barefoot was beyond me.
There were women there who shouldn't be wearing the dancing
costumes they were wearing. Some weren't so bad, but one woman
looked like she stepped off a 'big momma, little clothes' episode
of Ricki Lake. I couldn't tell if she was just fat or if she
was pregnant, or a bit of both, but if your stretch marks are
showing, you're exposing a bit too much flesh.
There was a male dancers there. No, he wasn't a poof. He was
dancing next to the women but not in the same way as the woman.
It's hard to describe. The women were bellydancing and he was
complimenting their movements. You have to see it to appreciate
it. Very sensual. If more men knew how sexy it was for the women
to watch, more men would take "traditional middle eastern
dance."
Sunday I was so damn sore from dancing and the zoo I didn't
think I could walk. I did show up for class Sunday afternoon
but let me tell ya, I wimpered and moaned with every stretch
and step.
