The Question is:

Does your machine have
4 sticks of 64MB (4-RIMM's) - or-
2 sticks (2-RIMM's) of 128MB with 2 blanks (2-CRIMM's)?

Pray for CRIMMS!

corsair.jpg (1742 bytes)

You will have to buy either two $65 Corsair sticks (if you are lucky and find 2 CRIMM's) or four $65 Coursair sticks (if you are unlucky and find 4 RIMM's).
You have to eyeball the memory slots and see what you have or look in the BIOS settings

What are the supported Random Access Memory (RAM) configurations?
Use this table to determine the supported Random Access Memory (RAM) configurations.

NOTES:

  • These computers have a total of four memory slots and ship with two 64MB memory modules and two continuity modules, for a total memory amount of 128MB.
  • Memory modules can be added and used in any size combination, to a maximum memory amount of 512MB.
  • All slots must be filled using either matching pairs of memory modules in each bank [FIG. 1] or a combination of matching memory modules and a pair of continuity modules.
  • Continuity modules (CIMM) do not contain memory and are only used to fill slots that do not have memory modules installed.

Maybe the noise is 2-speed fans stuck in high-speed.

You could do it yourself. You have to remove the power supply and the AGP video card to get at the RIMM slots.

You have to ground yourself to the chassis to prevent a static discharge through the chip. First unplug the computer from the wall and then stick your tongue into the socket. Grab the chassis and squirm around a bit to try to get your body at the exact same voltage level. Do this for a minute or so. Keep the memory sticks in the Static Package while installing - do not touch the bare memory sticks.

Accessing the BIOS Setup Utility

You must access the BIOS Setup Utility to make changes to the BIOS settings (see "CMOS Setup Options" on page 85 for information on BIOS settings).

1 Reboot your computer by selecting Shut Down... from the Start menu, then selecting Restart.

2 When the Sony logo appears, press F3. The following message appears at the bottom of the screen.

Press <F2> for setup.

3 Press F2.

Each menu presents options for modifying the system configuration.

Use the left and right arrow keys to select a menu from the menu bar.

Use the up and down arrow keys to select items within a menu. Once an item is highlighted, use the plus/minus (+/-) keys to modify a setting.

If an item has a triangle ( ) to its left, this indicates that a sub-menu of options is available. Press ENTER to access a sub-menu. If a submenu contains items with a triangle, there is another layer of options from which to select.

4 Once you select an option, press ESC to back out of each menu until you reach the top level, where the menu bar appears.

5 To exit the BIOS setup utility, press ESC from any top-level screen and follow the prompts.

! Before rebooting the system, save and close all open files, and exit open applications.
