Macfixit Site

The Reports section of Macfixit is a troubleshooting page that will help you fix problems in all Operating Systems on Macintosh computers.  It will also give tips for troubleshooting software programs that you may use on a Mac.

The Library section is a collection of troubleshooting-related freeware and shareware utilities.  In most cases, clicking on the link will take you to a VersionTracker Web page from where the file can be downloaded.

Macintosh Utilities

This is a great website with a list of utilities for Macintosh computers and links to articles that explain ratings of the effectiveness of each tool.  The creators of this site have tested each utility and put them into categories for you to find the program you may need.

Important Utilities found at the Macintosh Utililities website:

Apple Drive Setup 1.7.3  It is strongly advised that your computer has the current version of Apple's Drive Setup, which updates your disk drivers as a precautionary measure.  The program can be downloaded for free from Apple. DiskExpressPro 3.x  DiskExpress Pro is a powerful disk optimizer and defragmenter.  The technology in this program can double the performance speed of your Macinotsh hard disk.
Disk Warrior 1.1  DiskWarrior prevents disk damage and prevents your directory from being destroyed.  It will also alert you to any existing directory damage.  A component of DiskWarrior, called DiskShield, keeps the directories on your disks updated so that you won't lose data in the case of a crash or loss of power.  The program is also excellent for file recovery. AGAX Agax is a free downloadable Mac antivirus program.  You can download the program from the AGAX Home Page.  The utility performs both standard virus-scanning facilities and more advanced background protection -  for prevention so your computer stays virus free.
MacToolsPro  This is an excellent utility for file recovery.  It is no longer being shipped, which means you need to find the used version and order it from another source.  DiskWarrior may be a better option since you can order it from the Macintosh Utilities site.

This site is geared towards the PC's major internal components and peripheral devices and is more concerned with PC technologies than products.  The site features several guides, such as components, storage, multi-media, input-output and communications.  This is a very popular site for PC Technology and has received numerous awards and accolades.

PC Support

A down-to-earth troubleshooting guide for IBM PCs.  Look at the table of contents on the left and click on PC Maintenance.  The click on Maintenance Schedule to see what maintenance you should be doing for your PC and how often.  You can then click on each item under How To to get directions for how to do each of these maintenance items.  After reviewing this information, you should know that  you need to regularly do a scan disk  and a defrag.

Still confused about how to do a scan disk or defrag for your IBM PC?  This site actually shows you screen shots of how to do a defrag and scan disk.  This will work for Windows 95 or Windows 98.
