I head read a few Bubblegum Crisis fanfictions before finding fanfiction.net,
where my own repository of tales are stored. There was one other large story
that I read through which had more of the original series characters, and by
not following 2040 had a looser and more flexible format that fanfics could
follow (the original series dealt with all kinds of social situations as
cyberpunk as meant to, 2040 was a storyline) and it gave me the push to write
my own.
I prefer 2040 over the original series just because of its characters who
are much more interesting, less one dimensional. Sylia has become a driven,
mad woman, Linna is the open-eyed introduction to the new series and to the
Knight Sabres, why she is my favourite character. Priss is Priss, and Nene
remains the token kawaii character. 2040 might have lost some of the
grittiness of the original series, and run out of money to maintain production
standards, but I liked it more, again the character play, and chose my
fanfiction appropriately.
Kiss Of The Bee was only going to be a three-part series clearly focused on
a Priss and Linna pairing. But I got good reviews and encouragement to write
more, and I had plenty of time then, living off the government, so turned the
small start into a 75,000 word first novel full of action and plot that went
well beyond the 2040 storyline, probably taking it into the the original
series flexibility of corporate danger. I didn't mind, as did most readers
(although I got extremely irate at one and wrote a chapter length response to
his problems of my portrayal of the Sabres not being undefeatable).
It was the time of Black Hawk Down, smoke trailing RPGs flying through the
air inspiration for one of my better chapters (allowing the KOTB original
books to be created in the process) quickly written the same day (or the
second time I saw BWD) and letting the story stand on its own away from the
2040 arc. From there it moved quickly, on its own power, as a homage to Akira
was made in the Bicycle Race chapter, a favourite, and the Knight Sabres fell
apart because they were not prepared to fight the kind of enemy they now
faced: humans.
I wanted '0' to explore this theory, that the KS in 2040 would have been
outclassed by any corporate paramilitary force as they were not trained or
equipped to fight and kill other humans. In 2040 their enemies had been
boomers only, the original series had them fighting boomers, human controlled
robots, everyone. Linna would not out of principal kill another human, Nene
couldn't. Sylia, well she didn't have the time but it wouldn't bother her and
Priss would do it out of necessity. And that was Chapter 7, the RPG chapter as
Sabres fought human and came out the defeated.
From there, new territory, and the Second Act. The way '0' is structured it
can easily be a film. The Sabres are broken and in hiding. Priss doesn't want
anything to do with Sylia anymore. Nene doesn't want to leave her house,
fearing for her life. Sylia can't, wounded. Linna is no longer Linna. Priss
acts however, out of friendship to Nene and Linna wanting to save them, and
let Sylia burn in her own fire. But their enemy, Genom Executive Brian
J
Mason, is still after them and creates a trap, with a bait that cannot be
refused. '0' ends dramatically and where few serious fanfics have gone; the end also
the beginning of an original Kiss Of The Bee.
