In a poetic mood we notice the wild plants, the animals, men and women involved in life's mysteries. We see the future.

The training of surgeons in America
    by Romeo Giuli

April 2001.     Humanistic section.

In the January/February 2001 number of Annals of Surgical Oncology there is an article about "The training of Surgeons in America". This cited article of Douglas Reintgen, MD, Claire Modarelli, BA, and Charles Cox, MD discusses the training programmes on new technology or surgical techniques for surgeons who have graduated from their residencies.

The actual sophisticated procedures of surgical oncology need a multidisciplinary approach, that is carried out with a coordinated effort that involves a team of physicians.

We appreciate the effort of the authors to establish rational criteria in this respect.

Moreover we think that:
Medical Doctor must be a learned man. This is essential in the approach with patients, and it permits to understand the complicated scientific philosophy and philosophy in general.
Because clinical activity is linked to scientific research, and scientific research depends on philosophy.
Therefore it is not justified a pure technical approach.

Philosopher Martin Buber explains that the man has not an earthly and stable house, and what he does, the art of medicine, poetry, and others things are means to find the true house.
It is different from the Enlightenment culture where man has is own house: science and technique.
