On the first day of the festival, the grand vizier went in procession from his own tent to the imperial pavilion where he was greeted by troops and officers of the Janissary,
Spahi, Armorer, and Engineer corps assembled there for that purpose. After a ceremony in which members of the Ulema recited benedictions, İbrahim Pasha dismounted and proceeded to the triple-poled council tent and seated himself there. Shortly afterward he received Mehmed Pasha, a former vizier and steward of the queen mother. In the frame at the right (17b) we see Grand Vizier İbrahim Pas
ha standing in the council tent receiving a very deferential Mehmed Pasha who is dressed in a rather ordinary turban and everyday clothes rather than formal attire like everyone else. Standing at the left are three viziers wearing patterned silk kaftans and kallavî turbans. The figures standing just inside the entrance to the enclosure must be the steward of the Doormen, the master of the Sergeants at Arms, and Muhzır Agha. Just outside the entrance are five council sergeants. In (18a) we see the officers of the Janissaries, Spahis, Armorers, Engineers, Artillerymen, and Draymen and their subordinates dressed in ceremonial costume and arrayed according to rank and precedence. At the head of the central line is the Janissary grandmaster, dressed in a patterned silk kaftan and selimî turban. Standing behind him are his immediate subordinates. The figure in this line sporting a black crest is the “İstanbul agha”, the head of the corps of newly recruited janissaries undergoing training. The figure immediately before him would be the Janissary master. The first two figures in the line standing to their right are the heads of the Spahis and Engineers. The third figure is the subaşı
, the head of the city’s police organization. In the remaining row we see officers of the Armorers, Artillerymen, and Draymen and their subordinates.Notes
1. Spahi: Enfoeffed knights.
