THE GREAT PARADE AND THE CIRCUMCISION OF THE PRINCES (157b-173a)
The festival that began on Wednesday, September 18th 1720 lasted fifteen days in all, during which time feasts were held, performances were given, guildsmen marched, and several thousand boys were circumcised at the court’s expense. On the last day of the festival Vehbi tells us that there was a game of jereed, a horse race, a feast, and the competition to reach the silver vessel filled with coins on the mast. Levni does not depict any of the events that took place during the last five days. After the festival was over, all the tents and other structures in Okmeydanı were dismantled and removed and on Wednesday, October 2nd, the court returned to Topkapı Palace where preparations for the last events were already in progress. Between October 4th and 8th more there was more entertainment and performances and another 532 boys were circumcised. Now it was time for a great parade in which the candy-gardens and festival-trees would be transported from Eski Saray to Topkapı before the sultan’s own sons were circumcised. Levni now returns with sixteen double-page miniatures depicting this parade in a long, unbroken frieze.
In (157b) janissaries in the lead clear the way for the chief of police and captain of the guard who are followed by the Janissary master (the turbaned figure in a blue robe) and the keeper of the hounds at his right. The figure sporting a huge white plume with a black aigrette at the left edge is the İstanbul agha. In (158a) three white-plumed Janissary aghas are followed by the Janissary grandmaster dressed in a tall turban and patterned silk kaftan. The procession is flanked on either side by lines of marching janissaries. A large contingent of sackers engaged in various antics marches across the top of both frames.
