Derek was crowned the Sole Survivor, beating Tyler in a narrow 4-3 vote.
Derek was born in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and has lived in rural southeast
Iowa
all of his life. His father is a farmer and his mother works at the
local
bank. Derek has two older brothers, Kevin, 22, is looking to take over
the
family farm and Vic, 21, is a senior in college. During his childhood,
Derek worked with the turkeys, cows, and pigs on the farm and pestered
his
older brothers.
While in high school, Derek participated in many events. He ran cross
country and track and also played baseball and basketball for four
years in
high school. On top of athletics, he also participated in band, choir,
speech, drama, and was president of the student body. Derek graduated
second in his class and went on to attend a private college not too far
from
home.
Currently, Derek is a freshman in college and is double majoring in
business
and communications. He participated in drama this fall and has plans
to
participate in the schools mock trial team the following fall. After
graduating from college, Derek plans on going to law school.
Derek tried out for Survivor to prove to himself that he had the
strength to
pull himself through in the toughest of spots. His parents didn’t want
him
to miss school for a game but he told them, “If I win the money, you
won’t
have to pay for my school.” With that thought in their heads and
knowing
their son’s love for the game, they pushed him out the door and bought
his
ticket for the interview.
In his spare time at school, Derek enjoys playing tennis or baseball,
reading, hanging out with friends, and going to the movies. At home in
the
summer, Derek enjoys camping in their timber and fishing in their pond.
He
also loves playing with his three dogs, Maisy, Phoebe, and Zena.
Derek’s birth date is August 21, 1984.
