Below are details of immediate family graves I have found in the cemetery and others of general interest.

This is the gravestone of my Great Grandparents

which was erected as instructed by 

Mary  in her Will.

who died January 19th 1917 aged 67 years

Also Mary his wife who died October 16th 1929

Also Lily their daughter who died June 3rd 1895

aged 9 years

This is the gravestone of my Great Grandmother

Catherine Bramwell (formerly Livingstone)

and her parents and various siblings.

As you can see it gives a great deal of

information and was enormously useful

when I discovered it at the beginning of my

research into the Briggs family when I had

only got as far back as Catherine.

aged 50 years

who died June 8th 1888   aged 66 years

Also Samuel Briggs son of

Hugh and Martha Briggs

born May 12th,  Died May 12th 1851

and was interred at the Parish church

Also Hugh their son

who died Oct 1st 1859 aged 3 days

Also Samuel their son

who died December 31st 1861 aged 13 months

Also Catherine Bramwell, daughter of the above

born Feb 8th 1855  Died Aug 28th 1905

Also James their son and beloved husband

of Ellen Briggs

born July 17th 1847  Died Nov 6th 1920

Also Ellen Briggs his wife

born July 6th 1848  Died April 12th 1937

Alice Briggs Livingstone (who died from appendicitis)

and Robert are the children of

Catherine Bramwell above.

In affectionate remembrance of

FREDERICK JOHN KEMPSTER

(the British Giant)

Died April 15th 1918  Aged 29 years 

 

 

 

Frederick John Kempster was born in London and became a fairground attraction because of his height. He was 8foot 4½ inches tall and weighed 27 stone. He died in Queens Park Hospital, Blackburn at the age of 29 from pneumonia and was consequently buried in Blackburn Cemetery.

His coffin was over 9 feet long and 9 men were needed to lower it into the grave.

In Memory of Pte JAMES PITTS VC

The Manchester Regiment

Died February 18th 1955  

Aged 77 years

 

James Pitts was born 26th February 1877. At the age of 22 he was a Private in 1st Battalion The Manchester Regiment at the time of the Boer War in South Africa.

On 6th January 1900 during an attack on Caesars Hill, Natal,he was one of just two men left out of 16. They held their post under constant fire for 15 hours without food or drink until relief troops had managed to retake lost ground and regain the hill.

 

His VC is now in the museum of the Manchester Regiment in Ashton under Lyne
