Ellis

Ellis PAST

This is the line of my paternal great-grandmother Nanny Ellis who married Smith Hartley in 1888. Nanny lived with her aunt Mary Hartley (nee Ellis) from at least 1881 until Mary died in 1892, she left Nanny money in her Will. This Will was very informative as it named Mary's siblings and was the starting point of my research.

Marys Will was made in 1882 and contained the following:

Executors were her brother James and nephew William son of Thomas. By Marys death in 1892 William is the sole surviving executor.

Details are:

MI shows as adopted daughter  Ada TROTTER who died  1896  aged 23y.   see below

In her Will Mary Hartley leaves property to William Ellis , illegitimate son of Thomas Foulds

There is a baptism for a William son of Elizabeth in 1842, this Elizabeth is possibly the Elizabeth above who married John Shaw

William  1842    m   Martha HARTLEY  (maiden name RUSHTON)

This is a Registrar attended/non-conformist wedding which I haven't checked as the records are not available at LRO

The couple have no known children together although Mary has 2 sons, Thomas Rushton and Bilsbury Hartley from her first marriage

In 1891 & 1901 they are living at 24 Back Clayton St in Colne, former home of John & Mary Hartley

Mary Ann Nutter   born about 1848

In 1851 she is living with  Robert Ellis and in 1861 & 71 she is with Mary (Ellis) & John Hartley in both cases she is described as niece.

She died in 1879 and her MI describes her as grand daughter to William Ellis d1863. I have yet to discover her parents

Ada Louise Trotter  b1873 West Derby reg. dist, d1896 Burnley reg. dist.

Ada was the daughter of Frederick and Hannah TROTTER Grandma Mary dies in 1881, Frederick in 1882 and Hannah in 1883

1881 28 Premier St, Everton

Mary Ann Trotter   widow  70y   b Colne

Frederick Trotter  son  39y

Hannah Trotter  dau-in-law  43y

Frederick William  grandson  9y

Ada Louise  grand dau  7y

Alfred E  grandson  4y

Earlier census shows Mary Ann was married to Lionel TROTTER and the family were in Liverpool from at least 1838 but as she was born in Colne

I feel sure they must be connected to the Ellis family somehow, unfortunately haven't found a marriage yet.

Here are details of 2 Wills I have recently seen at Lancashire Record Office, I don't know if they fit into my research but may be of use to some one.

William Ellis of Colne, Tailor  1823

Burial records at St Bartholomew's, Colne show William was 67y when he died making his date of birth about 1756

bullet

Nancy Ellis the natural child of Mary Hartley

bullet

James Ellis son of brother James

bullet

William Ellis son of brother Nicholas

bullet

Christopher & Mary Hartley children of sister Mary Hartley

bullet

Susan wife of John Walton of Colne Lane

The Will was made on 2 April 1821 and William died on 27 Feb 1823

The executors were Christopher Ellis (& James Walker who died before 1823)

Betty Ellis of Colne, spinster  1809

A simple Will leaving all household goods and monies to sister Jane Ellis, who was also executor.

The Will was made on 27 March 1809 and Betty died 9 April 1809

I was unable to find her burial at St Bartholomews in Colne
