Based on the award winning play by Julian Mitchell, the film explores the effect of Public School life in the 1930's on Guy Bennett as his homosexuality and unwillingness to "play the game" turns him eastwards towards communist Russia. This is a story of Guy Bennett, an upper-class English boy in his penultimate year at a public school. Guy is about to launch himself into the elite society and looks forward to his future in the diplomatic service. Homosexuality runs rampant at this exclusive public school, and Bennett is not an exception. However, his casual affair with Harcourt turns to love and he begins to live dangerously, especially in terms of his perfect classmates who can punish him. Bennett's refusal to play their game ends in public humiliation. Knowing his hopes for the future are now ruined, he resolves to strike back, using the communist creed as his weapons. |
