Luc Besson was born in Paris on March 18, 1959, and spent most of his childhood living in the idyllic settings of various Mediterranean hideaways where his parents worked as diving instructors. From the age of 10, Besson determined to become a maritime biologist, specializing in the study of dolphins. Besson studied for this life plan throughout his teens until, at 17, a diving accident prevented him from ever diving again. His long-held dream cut short, Besson redirected his sights, deciding that he would become a filmmaker. Besson dropped out of school to seek work in the French film industry, and started making his own first experimental films in super-8. At the age of 19, he moved to Los Angeles, where he lived for three months working in the American film industry. Luc Besson worked his way up in film, television, and promotional video before making his first feature film in 1983. He became well known after Subway (1985). Later films include The Big Blue (1988) and Nikita (1990). He already showed amazing creativity as a youth, writing early drafts of Le Grand bleu (1988) and The Fifth Element (1997), as an adolescent bored in school.

In 1412, a young girl called Jeanne is born in a remote village in France. The times are hard: The Hundred Years war with England has been going on since 1337, English knights and soldiers roam the country. Jeanne develops into a very religious young woman, she confesses several times a day. At the age of 13, she has her first vision and finds a sword. When coming home with it, she finds the English leveling her hometown. Years after that, in 1428, she knows her mission is to be ridding France of the English and so sets out to meet Charles, the Dauphin. In his desperate military situation, he welcomes all help and gives the maiden a chance to prove her divine mission. After the successful liberation of Orleans and Reims, the Dauphin can be crowned traditionally in the cathedral of Reims - and does not need her anymore, since his wishes are satisfied. Jeanne gets set up in his trap and is imprisoned by the Burgundians. In trial against her under English law, she can't be forced to tell about her divine visions she has had continuously since childhood. Being condemned of witchcraft and being considered as relapsed heretic, she is sentenced to death. Jeanne d'Arc is burnt alive in the marketplace of Rouen on May 30th, 1431, at only 19 years of age.
