The above house still shows the markings of bullet holes from the war. It's been authentically restored into dining rooms. We dined by candlelight among original decor and enjoyed a variety of period speciality fare including game pie, pumpkin fritters, chicken pot pie, grilled chicken, fresh garden salad, sweet watermelon rind and corn relish made from a 100 year old recipe according to the menu and Jennie Wade bread served with Adams County apple butter. There are no words to describe how delicious it all was. A touch of "back then" music played in the background as we dined, laughed and had a wonderful time. I myself experienced something I never had before and still swear to this day that I caught the sight of a cats tail just before it went under my chair and under the table. After searching under our table, I found no cat. It was then I had to ask the kind waitress if there was a cat roaming in the house, because I truly felt I had seen the tail. She stated "no", and it was then that I began to wonder if maybe I had not seen the glimpse of a cats ghost that may have lived there years ago. Other members of the family have seen and felt things of this nature, but it was a first for me. And what gave the early evening a perfect touch was as Dee Dee and I were signing the guest book, the light went out for just a second or two, then came back on. It was then I was more than ready to go, but a visit and a dinner and experience I shall never forget. |
