This teapot was made in November by using Yi Xing (pronounced
ee-sheeng) techniques taught by the artist Gu Mei-Qun.
The clay body was made with Black Mountain clay (high fire). The body handle,
lid handle, and spout are all notched in a bamboo-like pattern. The adornments
on the lid and body are fashioned to be like a bamboo forest with branches and
leaves. The stalks were made by cutting and notching simple coils, and then
attaching them with slip. The Yi Xing style does not use scoring or texturing
with slip.
Because zisha clay was not used, a coat of Nelson's glaze was brushed on to
emphasize the bamboo forest texture of the pot.
Please note that this pot uses Yi Xing techniques, but uses different materials and takes liberties on the traditional forms.
