This teapot was made in November by using Yi Xing (pronounced
ee-sheeng) techniques taught by the artist Gu Mei-Qun.
The clay body was made with Black Mountain clay (high fire). The body started
out as a cylinder, and then formed into a beveled shape by repeated patting
in a circular manner. The pot is small, but Yi Xing pots typically hold only
1-2 servings of tea.
Unlike zisha, Black Mountain is not a self-glazing clay, so Nelson's glaze was brushed onto the pot to finish it. An excerpt of a poem was copied and etched into the body, but the glaze accumulated in the markings and obscured them.
Please note that this pot uses Yi Xing techniques, but uses different materials and takes liberties on the traditional forms.
