This teapot was made in November by using Yi Xing (pronounced
ee-sheeng) techniques taught by the artist Gu Mei-Qun.
The clay body was made with recycled clay from varying amounts of high fire
clay bodies. The body began as a Yi Xing style cylinder, but was deformed into
a heart-like shape by hand (not a Yi Xing technique). The lid was made in the
Yi Xing style, but the body lacks the traditional foot ring.
This served as a model for another project, and was not intended for anatomical
accuracy.
Iron oxides were used to color the vessels, and these areas were protected with wax before immersing the bisqued pot in tomato glaze.
Please note that this pot uses Yi Xing techniques, but uses different materials and takes liberties on the traditional forms.
