Saw my old girlfriend at the grocery store
On one stormy Christmas Eve
I saw her int he checkout line
And I touched her on her sleeve

She didn't recognize the face at first
But, then her eyes grew open wide
She went to give me hug
and purse fell on the ground

The groceries were totalled up and bagged

We went to find ourselves a bar
To have ourselves a dreink or two
Nothing was open
We bought a six-pack at the liquor store
And we drank in her car

We drank a toast to innocence, we drank a toast to now
Tried to reach behind the emptiness, but neither one knew how

She said married herself an architect,
he kept her warm and safe and dry
She'd liked to say that she the man,
but she didn't want to lie

Just for a moment I was back in school, I felt that old familiar place
And as I turned to make my way back home, the snow turned into rain
