030301 » dude, i'm with the band

listening to | elixir / george
feeling | like i just drank 5 cans of v in a row

well uni is certainly back! if i hadn't already realised this, i most certainly did last night! it was newcastle uni's annual mini music festival, o'ball. 3000 people crammed into the union building with copious amounts of beer. something for kate, iOTA and george were headlining, so i was a very happy little 4th year.

george were fucking fantabulistic (am i allowed to swear in my own journal vic?? :P). ty resplendant with sideshow bob hair, and katie causing me fall more and more inlove with her voice every second. before the band played the song 'breathe on now' they dedicated it to yours truly. if i didn't already love these guys, i did now. even though the mention of my name caused a group of my friends to start chanting "kate! kate! kate!" how embarrassing. *hides*

iOTA came on next. his bass player bongo is back, minus his butt length dreadlocks, and with the addition of an eye patch. oatie was as good as ever. for the 2nd time that might i got my own special mention. as oatie left the stage he pointed at me and shouted "oh my god! it's pickgirl!" how rock am i?

tip number one for getting in with the band: see them since their 1st gig in your home town/city. they respect your loyalty and the fact you bring all your friends with you so that they might make a measly $10 out of the gig. oh, and a quirky habit like asking for guitar picks, or yelling out for a song the band never plays whenever you see them helps also.

something for kate up next. paul has the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand at every gig this band plays in newcastle. this one was no exception. we novocastrians just love these guys. for those sfk fans out there, the new songs are superb and the album looks like it is going to be a corker! oh yeah and i got another mention when paul introduced the band. "hi we are something for kate" hehe. ok, well maybe not then. :P

so anyways, after the gig i got to hang out with the bass player (pauly b) and guitarist (nick) from george for a few hours. they gave us a little mini concert on a couple of acoustic guitars. my friend arty and i overused the phrase 'we're with the band' way, way too much. but it's all good, it kept us amused. oh yeah, and from this point in time onwards, pauly b is now known as the muffin man. hehe. oh and vic, i kissed pauly on the cheek when he gave me a hug. :P to all you breakers fans out there: i got a big squishy hug form alex the photographer's identical twin brother nick. so there. :)

ok, moving on from what sounds like a really bad and self absorbed gig review to something a little different.

i have just about finished reading the jeff and tim buckley biography 'dream brother.' if nothing else, this book has really shown me how every little detail of your life - no matter how insignificant it seems at the time - plays some sort of role. it has also made me glad im not a professional musician. record companies royally screw people over. for anyone who is a jeff or tim fan i highly recommend the book. personally, i havent been able to put it down. it is a sad read aswell. after reading the 1st chapter i alreay had a tear in my eye. but then again, that could just be because i am mildly obsessed with jeff buckley.
