Grade 3 Curriculum

Students in the third grade will be using:

*Selections from Houghton Mifflin’s Reading Books

* Guided Reading Program

•*Selected trade books

*Rebecca Sitton's spelling program

•*“Write Away” – writing handbook

*National Geographic Explorers Magazine

...and will be participating in:

•*Writer’s Workshop and weekly spelling assessments

• *the selection of books from our ever-growing classroom library

•

•*"Reading Rewards” program (Mrs. Trottier)

•

In the 3rd grade, students will be using the TERC math program along with supplementary material

Third grade students will be learning/refreshing the following skills:

*Place Value

•*Addition/subtraction Facts

•*Addition and subtracting with regrouping

•*Time, money and graphing

•*Multiplication/beginning division

•*Basic frctions

•*Probability

*Problem Solving

*Geometry

Third grade students will be studying:

*Plant growth and development

•*Sound

•*The solar system

*Simple Machines

*Great Body Shop

Animal/Plant adaptation

Students in the third grade will:

*Develop an awareness of current events, including those in the community, the nation and the world using such materials as Time For Kids magazine and newspapers .

•*Learn about map skills, the Thirteen Colonies, Colonial life, the American Revolution, Massachusetts and Arlington.

•

Students in the third grade will:

*practice neatness and legibility in their everyday classwork and homework.

*be learning all cursive letters (uppercase and lowercase) using the Zaner Bloser method.
