Two weeks after their birth, their mother died and the twins were put in the charge of two elderly ladies for their recuperation. At the age of one year, John was healthy enough to return to his father, who had just remarried. Perhaps the new wife felt unable to cope with a small child, for John was placed in the care of friends of the father he knew in Germany. These were John and Catherine March. The Marches wanted to adopt the child, but John would not permit this as the child was the only son John had at the time to carry on the Storck name. John was 10 years old when his father died.
