Dear Beverly,
The first and most important thing that you need to do is to contact your State Medical Provider, in your  case TennCare through the Social Security Department and apply for benefits.

Then immediately see to it that the State of Tennessee appoints your friend a counselor.  This counselor will be able to advise you on the next steps for rehab and medical needs.  At this point of the injury, you need all the help you can get and as quickly as possible.
If your friend  was injured in another state other than the Provider State (the state that he/she resides in), you will need to take extra precautions on ordering supplies, such as a wheel chair, special needs for his home and even where he receives his rehabilitation. etc. If it is at all possible get your friend back to the State of Residence.

The State of Tennessee TennCare program will not pay into another state.  So, if medical supplies and equipment is needed to be provided to the patient, it will need to be purchased inside the State of Tenn.  Your Medical counselor will be able to advise you on the necessary steps to provide the Medical assistance that is needed.
MAKE SURE   a STATE APPOINTED counselor is assigned to the  case.  If you have a problem, contact your Congressman Immediately.
REMEMBER:   The quicker you get attention to your friend, the better the outcome for benefits.  Rehab Centers will be you next concern.  Have the counselor compile a list of the best Rehab Centers in the State.  If the patient has other insurance, then you can get him into most any SPI Rehab in the country.  Craig Institute in Englewood, Colorada is an excellent one.  They are involved with all the newest research for Spinal Cord injuries.  Then go to work setting up for IMMEDIATE Rehab BEFORE he is released from the hospital.
Good Luck and God Bless you and your Family.   Sue
