MumHouse cleaning, doing odd jobs going out to the mill and working all hours this is my ma . Always Busy never a moment to herself what with seven children to look after it was no wonder. Apron on all the time, sleeves rolled up scrubbing floors knees sore and red, hands always in water, short wavy hair pulled back from the face with a clip, standing cooking when da did not . there was always lots to eat. Going shopping, there was no delivery then , a car was a luxury that only the rich could afford. having to carry heavy bags and stopping every few minutes to catch her breathe, hoping that one of the family would come and give her a hand. Every day was wash day, working over an old tub, washboard and a mangle to get the water out. all our clothes were always cleaned and ironed even though they were worn, and "hand me downs", but we were always tidy. The washing hung everywhere in our 2 up 2 down house, as the weather was always bad, but we survived, and it was all due to the great ma i had. She had a hard life but her family always came first, she never put herself first in any situation and all I can say now is ma I love and miss you. |
