12/15/01 Big changes over at the Women in Metal list. Please check it out and let me know what you think! Also, some minor updates to the Viking Music List and the Ultimate Wizard page.
11/27/01 Made some updates to the Metal Mondegreens list, including 2 Cannibal Corpse songs. Of course, pretty much everything Chris Barnes says is a mondegreen! Also, I recently got an easy-to-use gif animator program, so I've been adding animated sprites to my Ultimate Wizard page.
11/20/01 Saw the Harry Potter movie this weekend - WOW! Everyone should see this movie! If you've seen the movie, but haven't read the book, read it now because it's even better! Now I've just got to wait another month to see the first Lord of the Rings movie. Amazing isn't it? With the incredible shortage of fantasy movies being made, and considering that 99% of them are crap, how is it that we're suddenly so blessed?
BTW, I made some changes to my video games pages. I haven't fixed the picture yet, but if you click on the 5th building from the left, you can take a look at my personal high score page. Not that you care!
11/2/01 So much has happened! Let's see, Joe and Renae got married - they're on their honeymoon now, and we're taking care of their rat (Star) and 2 anoles (Fafnir and Tiamat.) We had a great Halloween party last Saturday. We even managed to surprise Sam with some birthday presents and stuff. (He just turned 30!) This year we had a "Sam"urai, a butterfly, Hermione, a police officer (in riot gear!), a cat-burglar, and Marylin Monroe... sorry if I forgot anyone. I hope to have some good pictures from that night. Liza graduated from Boot Camp - YAY!! What else? Hey, we got a new computer! That's right, no more 32Mb of RAM... no more 28.8 kbps dial-up modem... I kick ass! Actually, Sam does - he built it. Thanks! Visit his site, The Mighty Radish, and cheer him up.
Just updated the Viking Metal List. My apologies to everyone who contributed stuff and had to wait this long for me to get it up! (wow that sounds bad)
10/12/01 Updated Women in Metal and The Ultimate Wizard Website. Also, a much bigger accomplishment, Beth finished her first marathon last weekend! [much rejoicing] Her time was 5:25, but honestly anyone who can run 26.2 miles kicks ass in my book.
9/24/01 I added a new page dedicated to a great classic video game: Ultimate Wizard! Why? I don't know, because I'm a loser I guess. The page is under construction, but it should still be interesting to look at if you're a fan of the game. Or maybe you've never heard of it and you'll find you really like it. Maybe someday I'll actually finish something before starting something new. Maybe...
I also updated Barney's shrine. It's in the What's a Keir? section of my site, which I moved to a new folder. Sorry if you encounter any broken links because of my re-organizing.
9/18/01 I was going to talk about my recent adventures trying to get back home from Illinois after the terrorist attacks closed all the airports. However, it was such a minor inconvenience compared to what so many other people have suffered, so I'll spare you. Made a few updates to the Viking Music List and Women in Metal today. I also posted a list of music videos I have. If you think you'd be interested in trading something, take a look at my Video List.
8/30/01 It's funny how the busier I am, the less time I have to work on my website, and therefore I seem less busy to you. Well, last week I went camping in Watkins Glen, NY and visited Farm Sanctuary. I'll put up some pictures of all the cute animals when I get them developed. Watkins Glen is right on Lake Seneca, has a beautiful gorge to hike up, and is just a nice little town in general. There's a Nascar race track there too if you're into that sort of thing.
I updated the Metal Mondegreens page with several new Rhapsody mondegreens (thanks Dave!) I also added a bunch of MP3 samples. I miss my old MP3 ripper which let me rip exact portions of tracks directly from a CD. Now I have to rip the entire track then clip it, and even then I have to do it by seconds so the end product isn't quite as tidy. I'm also slowly working on a picture tour of my entire video game collection (even though it's always growing). You can check out the work in progress at http://www.oocities.org/svipdaag/vidgames/collection.html. Women in Metal update coming soon!
7/17/01 Added a new page to my music lists: Heavy Metal Vegetarians! I'm still working on it, but let me know what you think. All other pages have had minor updates.
I recently bought the following 4 CDs for a whopping total of $7!
- Annihilator – Carnival Diablos: I was all set to give this one a bad review, but decided to listen to it one more time. I stopped listening to Annihilator after their second album, but thanks to Silent Anger I decided to give them another chance. There are some really good songs on this album, like the title track. Is that Jeff Waters singing "Carniva-a-al yeah"? If so, he should do all the vocals!
- Babylon Sad – 'Kyrie': Ugh. I read a review of this about 8 years ago which implied that it was progressive gothic death metal, and I've wanted it ever since. In reality it's just shitty death metal. I like some death metal, and I can even tolerate sampling, but not when it's someone talking about raping and murdering little boys. What a bunch of crap. I'm just glad I didn't find it until it was sitting in a bucket of $1 CDs.
- Cyclone Temple – 'Building Errors in the Machine': This could have been a good album (or EP or whatever; it's only got 6 songs) except that it's seriously lacking in production quality. It's a shame because their other album was really good. What ever happened to them? (Just a thought - the "bonus track" is really good, and sounds like a cross between Sacred Reich and Faith No More).
- Dead Horse – 'Feed Me': I must be returning to my old school thrash days! 'Peaceful Death…' was one of the coolest albums. I'm just sad that nothing else they did could live up to it.
6/29/01 Changed the layout of my page. I'm still working on it, so don't complain yet!
6/13/01 Some sad news. My oldest cat, Barney had to be put to sleep last Wednesday. He had finally reached a state where he could no longer walk. Thank you to everyone who was so kind to him in his last days. If you're interested, there are some pictures on my cats' page. I will probably put up a more appropriate tribute later.
Having got that out of the way, here are some recent changes to the site:
Arthurian and Viking Music Lists: Updated with some contributions.
Backpacking with Phil: First update in a year and a half! Some of the links to Phil's Favorite Places are broken though.
Bard's Tale: By popular demand, my item lists for Bard's Tale I, II, and III are back up.
Links: Fixed a few broken links.
What's a Keir?: Updated my cats' page.
A few (but not all) new album purchases:
- Gardenian – 'Soulburner': A bit more death metal than I expected, but still good. There's enough variation to keep it really interesting.
- In Extremo – 'Weckt die Toten': not as good as their newer album, but I still recommend it. Heavy industrial folk metal and a lot of fun.
- Lana Lane – 'Queen of the Ocean': Wow! This album simply rocks. I first heard of her from listening to Ayreon. Oddly enough, my favorite songs on this one are the 3 bonus tracks (although that may be because I already had MP3s of most of the others.)
5/17/01 I updated the Viking Music List today, but I would like to take this opportunity to rant a little. My disgust with the current Viking music trend can be summed up in this quote from Ivar Bjřrnson (Enslaved): "[We don't] spend a lot of time dressing up like they did in the year 790 - like most other Viking Metal bands do. We try to connect with our ancestors on a non-material level - thoughts, dreams, runes, and the inner worlds. The term 'Viking Metal' has been turned into a bad joke today by dozens of worthless 'musicians' running around in potato sacks grunting about "Hey! Ho! Give me mug of ale! I am Viking and want to fight. Hey! Ho! I am Oden's son, and give me a mug of ale!" So I guess they can keep the Viking Metal title to themselves." Ironically, this pretty much describes what Enslaved were doing only a few years ago. Another problem I have is the large number of white supremacist bands who use Viking lyrics and imagery to promote their cause. Burzum is probably the most prominent artist in this category, but there is a whole scene of skinhead music which includes white power, fascist, and RAC (Rock Against Communism) bands. I have no patience for this stupidity. However, I have added some of these groups to the list just to give you a taste of what's out there. I will probably not update the list again for a long time.
5/7/01 Updated Women in Metal. I was informed that Hege-Marie Aanby has left The Sins of Thy Beloved, after only 3 months in the band. They have no hard feelings and are currently looking for a new female singer.
5/4/01 Nothing special. Updated What's a Keir? and Links.
4/17/01 Some sad news - Martin Walkyier has decided to leave Skyclad. However, all is not lost. Read more at The Official Skyclad Website or Martin's site. In spite of this, I will continue to work on my Skyclad Puns page.
4/10/01 I went to 2 shows last weekend. On Saturday, I saw my friend Steve's band, The Secret. They were great, but unfortunately that was probably their last show. On Sunday I saw Amy Ray (from the Indigo Girls) with The Butchies. Wow! I never thought I'd ever see so many headbanging lesbians in one room. The Butchies played a set by themselves and when Amy Ray came on stage they all played together, blending The Butchies' punk/metal style with Amy Ray's southern folk-rock for an incredible sound.
New purchases:
- Ayreon – 'Ayreonauts Only': As the title implies, this collection of unreleased versions of Ayreon songs is for the diehard fan only. The highlight of the CD is definitely the version of Temple of the Cat with Astrid on vocals.
- 'The Keepers of Jericho – A Tribute to Helloween': Not a bad tribute, there are some winners (Rhapsody, Sonata Arctica, and Luca Turilli) and losers (Vision Divine and Cydonia) and some that don't sound any different than the originals.
My website is nearing 4 years old! Time for a redesign. I've got just the thing, but it will be a while yet.
Metal Mondegreens: Changed the format (again!) but you might not even notice. Added a great mondegreen from the new Freedom Call album, and made some minor updates here and there.
Women in Metal: One of the better songs on the Helloween tribute is Halloween, covered by Dark Moor. It's a great rendition with powerful female lead vocals. I'll be adding them to the list if I can find more information on them, but for now enjoy a few minor updates.
3/20/01 Hello again! It's been a while, so I've got to tell you all about my new hobby: retrogaming (a.k.a. collecting classic video games). Well, it's not a new hobby, as evidenced by the Commodore room in my house, but it recently became an obsession. It all started last month when we decided to throw an 80's party. I dug out my Atari 7800 only to find out it was broken. The party was only a week away so I ran to the Taunton flea market where Beth found a Sears Tele-games system (essentially a clone of the Atari 2600). The party was a success (pictures coming soon) but it didn't stop there. I now have 4 different consoles in my living room with hundreds of games. For more information on retrogaming, check out Digital Press. I just got the 6th edition of their Collector's Guide which is a must-have for serious collectors.
In music news, everyone must get Avantasia – 'The Metal Opera'! This is a side project of Tobias Sammet from Edguy featuring vocals by people like Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation), Kaj Hansen (Gamma Ray), Andre Matos (ex-Angra), David DeFeis (Virgin Steele), and best of all "Ernie" (you'll know when you hear him!) It is simply amazing. "What is goin' on?"
Also, a couple weeks ago I went to see A Perfect Circle live at Brandeis College. If you're thinking "Oh, that's new metal crap" or "They're just a lighter version of Tool" you should check them out. You may be pleasantly surprised. I was! I couldn't see much at the show, but they sounded incredible. Unfortunately, Renae (who is the biggest APC fan I know) got sick and had to leave before she even got to see them. : (
Metal Mondegreens: Still can't make MP3 samples, but that won't stop me from adding new mondegreens. "Two dwarves have worn bad socks..." (Thanks Scott!)
Women in Metal: Added Kittie by popular request, and some more updates – see for yourself.
Links:Added a link to Digital Press, and fixed some broken ones.
2/21/01 I've acquired several new CDs since last time, just haven't had time to review them until now:
- After Forever – 'Prison of Desire': Kind of like a cross between Nightwish and Within Temptation. I first heard of them because the singer, Floor Jansen, appeared on Ayreon's 'Universal Migrator' album.
- Dark Tranquillity – 'Haven': DT's newest album is another good one. I fear though that they are turning into generic Century Media band #whatever. It's not that I don't like CM bands, its just that after a while they get this particular "sound" so that if anyone hears it they'll go "Oh, a Century Media band." Examples include Tiamat, Samael, Sentenced, and now DT.
- Grapow, Roland – 'The Four Seasons of Life': A really good solo album by one of Helloween's guitarists. I don't know anything about guitars but I think the guitar work is excellent. Unfortunately, I can't stand his voice! UCK!
- Heavenly – 'Coming from the Sky': Another power metal band like Gamma Ray or Blind Guardian, but they manage to pull off a great album that doesn't sound like just another clone.
- Lizzy Borden - 'Deal with the Devil': it doesn't get any cheesier than this! It's been 10 years since 'Master of Disguise', and this new one is an excellent comeback. I'm hoping to go see them in Hartford, CT on April 1st.
- Therion – 'Theli' and Tristania – 'Beyond the Veil': Two great albums I simply never got around to buying. I got these in a trade with John (aka King Lawnmower) from Silent Anger.
- Within Temptation – 'The Dance': An excellent EP, which I only had a copy of before. Even if (like me) you usually skip EPs, MCDs, and singles, this one is definitely worth picking up.
- Within Temptation – 'Mother Earth': Their best work yet! The most notable difference from their previous albums is that the death metal vocals have been replaced by some interesting atmospheric male vocals. Otherwise, it's just another amazing album from some exceptional Dutch musicians. BTW, the CD-ROM part is really cool too. It even has a video game where you play B.A. (yes, from the A-Team) beating up unruly fans at a WT show!
Fixed all links to the Somber Blessings page. Updates to Metal Mondegreens and Women in Metal soon.
2/2/01 So, it occurred to me that I always say what I'm listening to, but not what I'm reading. I just finished the first 2 books in the 'Guardians of the Flame' series by Joel Rosenburg. They're pretty cheesy (understatement of the year!) novels about a group of college kids who are playing some sort of D&D-type game when they are transported to "the Other Side" and become their characters. I read them when I was about 10, so it was sort of a nostalgic thing for me. Another book I just finished (actually I have a few pages left) is Brian Bates' 'The Way of Wyrd' which is the book that Sabbat's 'Dreamweaver' album was based on. Yesterday I once again delved into the worlds of Gene Wolfe by starting 'Urth of the New Sun' which is kind of like a bridge between 'Book of the New Sun' and 'Book of the Long Sun'. After that I'll have to start 'Book of the Short Sun', which he only just finished writing. Oh, and I'm also in the middle of 'The Complete Hothead Paisan' (thanks Renae!) which is a collection of comic books about everyone's favorite homicidal lesbian terrorist. It sounds scary, but you have to read it to understand because at first glance you'd think it was all about violence against men. It's so much more.
Metal Mondegreens: My AudioCatalyst software doesn't work anymore, so I can't make MP3's right now. However, I have added some new mondegreens which you should look at.
Women in Metal: Several people have sent me updates in the past week (I don't know the cause of this sudden burst of interest, but I'm not complaining!) and I have added those and more to the list. Also, Anita Auglend has left The Sins of Thy Beloved and has been replaced by Hege Aanby
Links:I finally added a link to the Scorpions website. They are one of the few bands that I have always liked (since 1986, I think). Which is not to say that I like what they've been doing for the past 10 years, but I still listen to their older stuff. Right now, I can't stop listening to 'Fly to the Rainbow'. It's an amazing album, and it boggles my mind that it came out when I was born!
Chicken Rules!
1/31/01 She'll probably never see this, but what the hell…
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BETH!!! XOXOXOXO
Beth's mom has surgery today too, so let's all send positive vibes to her… (cat vibes cat vibes cat vibes) ; )
1/14/01 My cool artist friend + housemate Liza is selling T-shirts on eBay. Please check it out!
Mud flap guy T shirt
Skyclad Puns: Added many puns from 'Folkémon'.
January 5th, 2001 Well, Christmas has come and gone, and a new year is upon us. What exactly does that mean? Well, it means the Earth has made a full revolution around the sun and returned to approximately the same arbitrarily determined point in space where it was a year ago. New years resolutions, anyone?
On the bright side, I got some cool stuff: a programmable LEGO set, a Dr. Who scarf (which is way to big for me!), a "Frybread Power" T-shirt (just like in the movie 'Smoke Signals'), the X-Presidents comic book by Robert Smigel (very funny!), etc. As an added bonus, my shipment from Nuclear Blast Germany came in!
- Brainstorm – 'Unholy': There are a couple great songs on here (Holy War and Don't Stop Believing spring to mind) but the rest of the album is fairly predictable German power metal.
- Edguy – 'The Savage Poetry': Pretty much what you would expect for a remake. Unless you're a die-hard Edguy fan, I'd wait for the next album (or Tobias Sammet's Avantasia – with great musicians from Kai Hansen to Sharon den Adel, it's got to be good!) If you've never heard Edguy, get 'Theater of Salvation' now!
- Gathering, the – 'Rollercoaster' single: A cool little single I got for $5. It includes a trippy little instrumental (Theme from 'The Cyclist') and an mpg video of Liberty Bell (which is a great video, but it looks better on my TV).
- Gathering, The – 'Always.../Moonlight Archer' LP: A good collector's item for diehard fans like me. Their demo material is much more raw, but still atmospheric.
- Helloween – 'The Dark Ride': I was a little disappointed with this one. If you like Andi Deris, buy it. If you're still waiting for Kiske to come back, give it up! No seriously, I think you would be better off with 'Better than Raw'. That was the album that made me like Helloween again.
- Iron Maiden – 'Out of the Silent Planet' single: Another cool single/CD-ROM.
- Skyclad – 'Folkémon': What can I say? Another great CD from the masters of folk metal. Catchy, heavy, it's all good.
- Sonata Arctica – 'Ecliptica': Actually, I didn't buy this. My friend Dave gave me a copyca. Decenta prog/power metal from Finlandica.
- Therion – 'Deggial': Another amazing album! I must say I was a little disappointed with Hansi's guest appearance. Though I prefer his voice, I thought they did better with Rolf Scheepers.
- Virgin Steele – 'The Marriage of Heaven and Hell part 2': Why do I keep buying their albums? I think they're a great band, but every album is the same! I suppose it was worth the $8 I paid for it, but I would recommend 'House of Atreus' first.
- White Skull – 'Public Glory, Secret Agony': This is a great album, but not much different from the last one though. Maybe a slight improvement.
So, back to the website……
Skyclad Puns: Now that I have 'Folkémon', I have a ton more puns to add to the list. Soon, I promise!
Women in Metal: A small update to the site. Hopefully more updates soon. Also, the new Within Temptation is out and it sounds amazing! Now I just have to find somewhere to buy it. HELP!!!
Links: Fixed/removed some broken links. Added a link to Metal Mockery, a very funny site which makes fun of all that I hold dear…
