Supposedly, the universe consists of nine distinct worlds. However, everyone seems to
come up with their own version of what the nine worlds are. Here is my interpretation.
Alfheim (also Ljusalfheim) | "Elves’ home" Home of the light elves. |
Ásgarð | The home of the Æsir. |
Hel | The realm of the dead, ruled by Hel. |
Jotunheim | "Giants' home" The world of giants, possibly the same as Utgarð. Utgarð is described as a realm outside of Ásgarð, ruled by the giant, Utgarð-Loki. |
Miðgarð | "Middle earth" The world of men. The rainbow bridge, Bifrost, connects Ásgarð and Miðgarð. |
Muspell (also Muspelheim) | Before the creation of the universe, Muspell was a bright, shining world of fire to the south of Ginnungagap. It is ruled by Surt who set fire to Midgard at Ragnarok. |
Niflheim (also Nifelheim) | The abode of darkness to the north of Ginnungagap was as cold as Muspell was hot. |
Svartalfheim | "Dark elves' home" The abode of the dark elves, or dwarves, who live beneath the earth. |
Vanaheim | The world of the Vanir before they made peace with the Æsir. |
