Chapter 5
Finally after weeks of work I’d finally loosened the bond on my right hand and flexed with all my strength. Snap! My right hand was free; I could now free the rest of my body. Now that I was free I needed to get to the landing pad, but I knew there was at least two guards on duty outside my room. All I had to do was lure one of them in here and...I was stalking through the jungle looking for any guard patrols. I could see the landing field from were I was. With no guards in sight I should make it there easily…hot wiring the landing ramp was easier than I thought. I made my way to the bridge and started the pre-flight checklist and waited for the ship to finish. I could tell that starting the ship had caused quite a stir within the prison; I could see guards boiling out of the nearest building. I needed to get this shuttle airborne… I cursed the slowness of this antiquated navicomputer. In just a few second I would be in range of Iron Fist’s tractor beams. With a beep the navicomp signaled it was done and I pulled back on the levers to enter hyperspace. Something was wrong though, hyperspace was usually a tunnel of white light, but there was no light only black. Laying face down in the dirt breathing my last few breaths I realized that my dream would never come true. I was going to die on this god-forsaken rock.
Pains shooting through my body let me know that I wasn’t dead at least not yet. I opened my eyes and saw that I was lying in a small bed in an infirmary. Not quite sure were I was or what was happening to me, I reverted to my most basic instinct, I began to howl and thrash about wildly. “Hey there buddy calm down.” To my left sat a human of about average height for a human. He had short dirty blonde hair and a smile on his face. “You gave us quite a scare there pal.”
“Who are you? Where am I? Why am I not dead?” I spoke the words so fast
that my implant could barely keep up with the translation.
“Whoa there, slow down fella. My name is Nicodemus and I’m the guy who pulled you off of Dathomir. Right now you’re in a medial center on Corellia. It seems you decided to bust out of Dathomir at the same time as me and a friend of mine, Saede. So we thought we would do the neighborly thing and drag you onto the ship. After that I was a little busy flying, Saede took care of you, with the minimal supplies the shuttle had. I managed to elude our captors long enough to reach hyperspace. Then I brought you to Corellia to get you patched up. Now if that doesn’t answer all your questions it will have to do for now, the med droid said you need to rest. So I think it’s best if you rest now and we’ll talk some more later.”
Later after I got out of the med center I finally met Saede. Now that I had them both together I was able to do want I wanted to do since the day I had woke up in the med center. Everybody was sitting around the living room talking about Dathomir. I stood up in the center of the room and cleared my throat. I unsheathed the claws of my left hand and pierced the center of the palm of my right hand. “I offer my life for the life of you, Nicodemus,” I placed a drop of blood on his head, “I offer my blood for your blood Saede,” and I placed a drop of blood on her head. “My life is no longer my own, I swear a debt of life to both of you, I will have no honor if I allow you to die if I do not precede you into the afterlife.” I don’t think Nicodemus and Saede understood the situation. They thought I wasn’t serious and would want to go back home within a week. Nicodemus even offered to use his rebel contacts and sneak me on the planet, but I had to stay by their sides. When Nicodemus got injured on his last rebellion mission it took him two weeks to persuade me not to follow him into the ‘fresher. For better or worse they were stuck with me as a protector.
I could tell Nicodemus was troubled and I was sure that he was going to do something rash. That’s when he decided that he was going to go see somebody that could help. I didn’t really believe him but I knew that I could find him if he was in trouble. I had a slicer friend of mine from the rebellion slice a program into the computer of the Star Stealer. Whenever he activated his hypercomm, the program would activate and take the location of the Star Stealer from the navicomp and send it to an account that I set up. So I would be able to backtrack him at any time I chose. I let him think that I was staying behind to watch Saede for him. If that wasn’t bad enough I walked into Saede’s apartment a few days later and everything was packed up. “Going somewhere.” She feed me some line about going to visit her family on Tatooine, but I knew better. I could read it all over her face she was leaving and she didn’t want me to come along, it hurt, it hurt real bad. I’d seen it coming with Nicodemus but I didn’t expect this with Saede. I had to think and think fast. “Well if you’re going to visit your family we can stop and visit my family on the way. You said that the final step of my recovery would be to visit my father and make amends.” She couldn’t argue with that, I knew Saede and I knew she couldn’t turn me down. When she landed on Kashyyyk, the beauty of my planet would heal her, and if that didn’t work a group of wookies would keep her from running off.
A few days later and the loss of my honor proved that Saede may have outsmarted me. “So you see brother my story is long and sad. I do not think my father will take pity on me and he will still stare at me with those eyes. Those cold eyes, that say ‘You’ll never be good enough, you’ll never be like your brother’. I don’t think I can face my father, Borro.”
“Well brother if it makes you feel any better I’ll be right there with you, ok.”
So here I am, Borro and I, looking for Nicodemus. I was right my father was still cold and distant. So I ran again, I ran from my old life and chose to follow my new life. Saede was gone and I had no idea when I would see here again, but I knew where Nicodemus might be, so I decided to go look for him. True to his word Borro was right there beside me, he came with me to find Nicodemus, it feels good having my brother at my side. The last time I left Kashyyyk I spent ten years in hell. I wonder what will happen this time. So I left my home with my brother at my side, a stuffed bantha, and a head full of bad memories, still I wondered what killed Chid.
