MID-CAROLINA IPMS SWAMPFOX NEWSFLASH June 2001 |
We had eight members in
attendance at our last meeting. Things are calming down now that the
contest has past. One thing that has come to light is that we still have
a recognition problem with our contest. That is, our contest is unusual
in our region in that two clubs jointly put it on but outside of our two
clubs this is not well understood by those who attend. Sumter has been
our full partner for several shows now and they work very hard for this
show. It is a 50/50 partnership and they deserve to get 50% of the
recognition. So what I am asking all of our members and our joint
members are to try and come up with some good ideas to increase Sumter’s
recognition if we do another contest.
They know we appreciate them and that we recognize their efforts but we need to increase this within our region. I know that it has been recognized in other regions as I have gotten correspondence from as far away as Washington State from clubs wanting to know how this is done as it seems so strange that two clubs can get along well enough to do a show together. What is strange to them has become the norm for us. So we (the two clubs) need to continue to lead by example. Sumter’s President Paul Lovell and I have already been looking at some ideas to increase Sumter’s recognition in case we do another contest, but any suggestions would be appreciated. They are good friends, they do 50% of the work, and they DESERVE equal recognition! Also as soon as I get the name and address of the trophy shop that Keith Frappe had the Best of Show trophy made that he so generously donated we will have the winner engraved on the first plaque. A bit of sad news is that according to their website as of 5:00PM June 30th, 2001 Accurate Miniatures will cease operations. It is a sad day for all aircraft and car modelers as they produced some of the finest kits made and they were always VERY supportive of our joint contest. Sending a donation to every contest including this last one. They will be missed. Eight years was not long enough. The Club was asked to do a display of models for the opening of the film "Pearl Harbor" at Columbiana Grand Theaters. Ten models were on display for the Memorial Day weekend and were well received by the public and Pearl Harbor veterans in attendance. As a result of this display we were contacted by Lewis Johnson of the Forest Acres chamber of Commerce about doing a model display at the Forest Acres City Festival on 10/27/01. I have already approached Sumter about this and they think it would be a good way to advertise both clubs. We will discuss this more at the meeting. New items on display for us to drool over were:

DUES ARE
NOW DUE! $12 for the year for our club members and $6 for those that hold joint membership with Sumter as their primary club. Also as a reminder any member of our club can hold a full joint membership in the Sumter club for $6 it is a great deal. Please pay Randy your dues at the next meeting. Our account now is $1486. Our old web address was http://columbiaswampfox.homestead.com. This site will soon be shut down. A new site is in the works and hopefully will be up and running soon. People have been asking for the following demos:
John Sherrer hopefully will soon do part two of his demos covering the different types of bases and ground medium. Steve, Randy and I attended the Sumter meeting on 6/7/01 and it was most enjoyable. One of their members is an official Air Force photographer and he put on a dazzling sideshow of some of his work. Maybe one day we can borrow him to do the same up here. Not to mention that Randy and I won some great kits in their raffle. Here’s a list of the upcoming contests:
The ones marked with an * are the ones members of our club and Sumter are planning to attend. If interested in joining us talk to Hub. There are still a few magazines left from Dr. Morin’s estate. If anyone wants to look through them give me a call. Next meeting: Till next time Hub |
