What are the second grade standards?
Please see the link to our district server. Check the links icon on the home page.
--------------------------------------
At what level is my child expected to read by the end of the year?
Your child is expected to read at Rigby reading level 22 by the end of the year. An example of this reading level is the popular Horrible Harry reading series.
--------------------------------------
How do I help my child prepare for timed math tests?
Your child will have a packet of math facts to practice. Help your child practice by reviewing the facts for 5-10 minutes a day. Try to make a game of it. Don't overdo or let practice become a battle. You can practice together in the car or anywhere. Your child will be tested with 36 problems to be completed in 2 1/2 minutes.
--------------------------------------
When should my child bring his/her math pack back to school?
It is not necessary to return math packs to school. Your child will automatically be tested each week with a written timed test.
--------------------------------------
How will I know when my child has passed a level in his/her math timed tests?
You will receive your child’s math timed tests in his/her Thursday envelope. He or she may also bring home a new math packet to practice.
--------------------------------------
What math facts is my child expected to master this year?
Our expectation is that your child will master addition and subtraction facts to 18 (36 problems in 2 1/2 minutes.) Once your child masters this, he or she will work on increasing speed (36 problems in 1 3/4 minutes.) Children who pass this level may move on to practicing multiplication and division facts.
--------------------------------------
What should my child do with the Making Words home activities?
The home activities are reinforcement for phonics work already done in class. They are meant to be a fun family activity. Your child will enjoy challenging you to find the “mystery word.” Since the words will be cut up and sorted, there is no need to send them back to school when done.
--------------------------------------
Do I need to check my child's weekly homework?
Your child should be able to complete his or her homework each week independently. However, we do encourage you to review the packet each week to make sure he/she has completed it thoroughly, neatly, and accurately before returning it to school each Friday.
--------------------------------------
My child's homework seems too easy (or too hard). What do I do?
For children who complete homework quickly and easily, optional homework is available beginning in late Fall for second graders. Children are given two weeks to complete each packet of optional homework. In addtion to optional homework, children can keep a reading journal, write a report on a subject of interest, or write a story at home. For children for whom the homework seems too dificult, we can modify assignments to meet his/her needs. Please schedule a conference so we can discuss how best to do this.
