“Christmas Day 1944”
While the Swanson was at anchor in Saipan Harbor, and enjoying a movie at approximately 8 PM on Christmas Day 1944, General Quarters was sounded as enemy planes were approaching from the north.
About 15 or 20 minutes later we commenced firing with our 40mm guns and shortly afterwards opened fire with our main battery (5”/38” cal.)
Results were unknown due to darkness but we secured from General Quarters about 11PM, ending Christmas Day 1944. So much for “Peace on earth and goodwill for men.”on that day. That was something for the future.
