“Ten percent never get the word !”

Military humor in WWII.

After a bombardment , we ceased fire and trained our gun in. I took off the phones and handed them to the Gun Captain and said: “Hang onto the phones while I go outside to clean off the gun sights.” We had been in a little rough weather and I thought I would clean the gun sights while we had a chance.

I went out there with lens paper and was cleaning them. I did not hear the report that gun #4 had been caught with a round in the chamber, so they trained around about as far as they could get towards us and I'’ upon the steps cleaning off the sight port when they unloaded that gun, and they blew me of the step and singed off my eye brows and my eye lashes!
