The Installation

Through our research we discovered that people living in certain areas of London often shared similar motives for coming to the UK. The purpose of our installation is simply to illustrate that fact.

The space is composed of three corridors, representing North, South and Central London. At the far end of each corridor is a monitor or projection of an immigrant talking about their experiences in the UK. As you enter the corridor you can see the immigrant in the distance talking about when they first arrived here, or describing a story about their life in London. As you approach the immigrant, you are subjected to a collection of sounds and visuals describing the former country of the immigrant and most importantly why they chose to come to the UK, (for example we met a man from Sri Lanka, who came here seeking asylum, he has no intention of going back. Perhaps you would see news footage describing events that caused him to leave). Eventually you are face to face with the immigrant they are still talking about their life in London.

The experience describes the contrast between the immigrants former country and personal history, to the place they find themselves in today.

The corridor as a basic structure for the space is important since it takes you from a to b and enhances the experience as a journey from one place to another. This could be setup as a tunnel which is on going and the immigrants interview is projected on a surface above the exit or a material through which the user walks through to see another immigrant.
