Performances
I started performing on professional stage even before my Arangetram. Playing Vishnu in “Terrible Boon”, a dance drama presented by my Guruji, marked the beginning. I also performed in “Birth of Urvashi” and “ Harishchandra Taramati”.
I have performed
professionally on stage both in India and the U.K. The press critics in India
have always acclaimed my recitals as pleasant, pleasurable and exhibiting
excellent footwork.
After coming to the U.K. in 1987, I have strived to keep the love for dance alive by teaching and performing in various parts of the country. While I was doing my Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at the University of St. Andrews I taught Indian Classical Dance for those 3 years at the Dundee Arts Centre, for which we received a grant from the Art’s Council. Due to family commitments I moved to the Midlands and have now settled in the North-west of England. During my stay in Birmingham I taught at the Midlands Art Centre.
I have given many classical dance recitals since then, both in India and the U.K. My repertoire consists of items like Allaripus, Jatiswarams, Shabdams, Varnams, Padams, Natanam Adinar and Tillanas along with some very ancient pieces like “Enthaho Vallabha Inneram mouna bhavam” and “Shive Shringaradare”, a shloka by Adi Shankaracharya describing the eight emotions from the eyes of Goddess Parvati. I also perform a Marathi Dashavtar choreographed to the translation of Geet Govind by Raja Bade.
I continue to choreograph my own dance pieces to add to my repertoire. I have performed along with the other members of The Northwest Dance Alliance in Nritya Sandhya and Devi.
