PREVIOUS OPINIONS - WotC license aquirement. Annakin Starkiller: In my opinion I think it was cheap of Wizards of the Coast to use Pokemon as a basis for their argument to obtain the CCG license from Lucas Film Ltd. Lucas Film lost a bit of respect from me when they decided to go for profit instead of quality. I haven't seen much of WotC's new game and I'm pretty sure I'm going to like it but that's not to say that Lucas didn't make a hasty move. Why throw away something that has worked for years. The players and Decipher were happy where they stood. Decipher created a great game with good strategy and appealing card designs. They strayed from the basic card game strategy of battle, battle, battle such as Magic the Gathering, Blood Wars, and the atrocity Wyvern. They strayed from the use of counters and dice. They created movement, thought, and variety. For a beginner it may seem complicated but in reality it was quite simple. The game, unlike Young Jedi or MTG, allowed a player to strategize their decks. There are so many cards in the SW:CCG that you can creat four different decks and still be out gunned. Main characters don't play such a big part in the game. Not every card has a use (in my opinion) but that doesn't mean that the card is useless. Confusing thought, I know. Some players not only take into consideration the text of a card but the destiny number or forfiet value. Most of these cards are called "recyclers." Some of these cards include "The Bith Shuffle" and "Omni Box." In changing the license to a different company Lucas Film Ltd. did not think about their target audience, the players. Since 1998 Decipher has provided a superior product. It may not have been big in some cities but it was one of the best CCG's out in the market. Lucas Film has to understand why Pokemon was so big. At the time the cartoon was at it's peak. Merchandising was a must. The movie was making it's debut. Kids were going crazy for it. Pokemon was at it's height but it has diminished and will continue to diminish. Take for instance the Power Rangers. Kids take a liking but lose interest as something new comes out. Now PR is out. Replaced by Pokemon, soon to be replaced by something else. WotC's audience in the game were those kids. The kids that find the toon, movie, and game of interest. Now the game has lost some of it's luster. I remember when you could by starter decks for $11 or $12. Now you can buy them for $5. Booster packs would cost $3.49. Now, $.99. Everytime I go to my local comic shop and someone buys Pokemon, they are under the age of 12. Parents buy the cards for their 6 year olds. There's nothing wrong with that. WotC hit their target audience. It wont be that way with the SW:TCG. The majority of SW gamers are over the age of 14. In my opinion I think Lucas should give both companies a license and let the players decide. Why throw away a five year relationship with Decipher for a risk. There have been talks about a boycott of WotC's new game. I for one will give it a chance. I've read the rules and it sounds interesting. Who knows, by giving Decipher and WotC a licence both companies can win. |
