Super Brian Calhoun
Super Brian Calhoun
  RUNNING BACK BRIAN CALHOUN

By Max Emfinger
Date: 3/9/2001

This kid was the Gatorade Player of the Year for his state as a junior when he beat out a returning All-American, scored 33 touchdowns, and averaged 11.1 yards per carry. His dad is a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy and you can bet that Brian has all of his academics in order.

Brian Calhoun (5-11, 183, 4.27) of Oak Creek, Wisconsin is the early favorite, in my book, to be the #1 running back in this recruiting class. He received every single honor that you can imagine a junior getting in high school football.

The obvious one that sticks out is the Gatorade Player of the Year for Wisconsin. Now remember, there were some pretty good players in Wisconsin last year including his teammate Robert Taylor and also a fellow by the name of Adam Stenavich who was a highly touted offensive lineman that signed with Michigan.

But let's be serious! when you rush for 1,967 yards, score 33 touchdowns, and average 11.1 yards per carry, you might get the feeling that this kid might be something Very Special. Calhoun only rushed for 1,967 yards, but he only played in half the game in most of them.

Another thing that makes this kid Special is his incredible athletic ability. He long jumps 24 feet, high jumps 6-6, runs a 10.6 in the 100m, and runs the open quarter in 48 flat. He averaged 37.8 yards on 10 punt returns as a junior, before the punters learned to kick it away from him.

Brian also has some pretty Special parents. His dad is a Lt. Commander in the US Navy and his mom is a medical doctor and is Director of Nursing.

If I was guessing who I think might be in the early lead for this incredible athlete, I would have to say it would be a team that has a great reputation for using the running backs to the fullest degree. Calhoun tells me that his early favorite three are Tennessee, Ohio State, and Michigan State and those three will probably get an official visit.

His grades are already in order as he carries a solid 2.5 GPA and he has already scored a qualifying 17 on his ACT.

MARCH 14 EMAIL UPDATE FROM LCDR Andrew Calhoun, CHC, USN (Brian's Dad):

Max, thanks for your recent story of my son, Brian. It is greatly appreciated. However, a couple of things need to be changed in it. My wife is a director of nusing and not a medical doctor. Secondly, Brian rushed for 33 TDs, however he scored 40 total TDs for the season, the other seven came from (5 receiving, 1 Kickoff and 1 Punt return), plus he scored 5 two point conversions, 25 points a game.

Thanks for your writing about Brian and your support.

MARCH 28 EMAIL:

Max:
I had a chance to see Brian Calhoun participate in his first two indoor track meets. Mind you, he had less than 7 practices prior to these meets. He has already jumped 6-8 in the high jump and 23-3 in the long jump. As a former 7 foot high jumper myself, I can say with certainty, that Calhoun's upside is in excess of 7 feet in the high jump and 25 feet in the long jump. I expect him to test the 7 foot barrier in the high jump and a 24-6 neighborhood in the long jump by the middle of the outdoor season (mid May). His lower body strength is incredible. His jumping technique needs work, but he will improve with time. It is easy to see why he is a threat to score every time he touches the football.
