Gossip is described as often involving personal or sensational rumors. Gossip can be anything from talking about someone’s personal life, to talking about something you don’t even know that is true. If you have ever heard someone gossip about you, you have a reason for being upset. There is something to remember: Your reputation doesn’t depend on what gossip says about you. It depends on how you live.
In Ruth chapter 3, Ruth earned her reputation, and Boaz could say, “All my fellow townsmen know that you are a woman of noble character” If we live a noble life, the only reputation that will be ruined is that of the person who gossips. In 1 Samuel, Saul labeled David a traitor and set out to kill him. But when David had the chance to kill Saul, he let him live.
David’s actions did more to disprove the lies told about him than anything he could have said. Sure, it’s upsetting to hear someone say bad things about you, But we should keep living a good life and prove by our actions how wrong those accusations are.
It’s hard not to be sensitive to what others say about you. In Eccleasties 7, Solomon says, “Do not pay attention to every word people say” Solomon is wise because many times people say things they don’t really mean. If you remember that human beings are weak and often say things they don’t really mean, it will help you follow Solomon’s good advice.
There are times when I have gossiped, and at the time, it doesn’t seem bad. Then later, I heard how what had been said had affected the person. But I also have heard people talk about me. I don’t especially like it, even when the gossip is not true. For me, gossip doesn’t come up a lot, because growing up in a church; I have heard lots of teaching about it. But it is something almost everybody has done. Most of the time, it is not meant to hurt someone. It is something you have heard about someone elsewhere. It seems harmless at the time, but later on, you might have a friend come up to you and tell them how they feel. The tongue is a mighty weapon. We need to choose our words carefully. |
