BEVERLY

BEVERLY and its shortened form BEV are Anglo-Saxon and refer to someone from the town of Beverly in Yorkshire England. The name literally means dweller at the beaver's meadow. There were no beavers in ancient Hawaii. Probably the first contact the Hawaiians had with this animal was in the hats of stylish Europeans so they invented the term 'ILIO-huhu-papale (dog-fur-hat) for this animal! Perhaps a Hawaiian equivalent of this name could be a shorthand form-MEA NOHO KULA-dweller at the meadow.
