BRANDY

BRANDY is not a traditional name but it has recently become popular. BRANDY would have its origin in the Dutch word 'branden'-to burn and now refers to an intoxicating liquor made by distilling wine. For the Hawaiian of this name we have chosen WAI (water) AHI (fire). Fire water is a popular way of describing intoxicating liquor and is a much better choice than PALANI-the word the Hawaiians chose to describe brandy when it was introduced into the Islands. PALANI is an ancient word meaning among other things 'to stink'. PALANI was also used to describe the French or a Frenchman. It was the French who introduced brandy to the islands.
