The shamrock, a three-leafed clover, at one time called the "Seamroy", symbolises the cross and blessed trinity. Before the Christian era it was a sacred plant of the Druids of Ireland because its leaves formed a triad. The shamrock was also a sacred plant during ancient Irish times signifying the coming of spring. As the English began to rule over Irish land, the shamrock became a symbol of Irish pride, heritage, and nationalism.
