History of St. Valentine's Day

The custom of sending special messages and gifts to the ones we love and care actually began in the year 270 A. D. The Roman Emperor Claudius was having difficulties recruiting men to serve in his armies because his men wanted to stay home with their wives and children. The Emperor was so angry that he decided to outlaw marriage. *Oh Dear*

Couples who were in love searched for someone who would help them get married in secret. A priest named Valentine thus, performed these wedding ceremonies for the young lovers. When the emperor found out, he had Valentine arrested and ordered his execution on February 14, the day of the Roman festival of love. The daughter of Valentine's jailer, Augustine was so kind to Valentine during his imprisonment that Valentine sent a "Thank You" message for her kindness and care.

So today, Valentine's Day is a day that we will say "thank you" for kindness done and for the gift of love and caring. ~Happy Valentine's Day~
