Patient Assessment


Initial assessment is the basis of all prehospital emergency care. The goal is to identify and correct immediately life-threatening patient conditions of the ABC's (airway, breathing, circulation). Here are the steps in the patient assessment:
  1. Forming a general impression
  2. Stabilize the cervical spine, "c-spine" (as needed)
  3. Assessing a baseline mental status
  4. Assessing the airway
  5. Assessing the breathing
  6. Assessing the circulation
  7. Determing priority
