George Harrison
(1943-2001)
"The Quiet Beatle"
Lead Guitar of the Beatles, successful solo artist,
George Harrison was undoubtedly a very importatnt person in the legacy of the Beatles. Having receiced fame all over the world before he was legally allowed to drink, having to be followed by police everywhere he went because of the massive surge of fans, you would expect George to become a little big-headed. But, in fact, he was the last Beatle to even acknowlege that he was apart of the Fab Four in his solo career in the late 80s. George was arguably the most spiritual and the most contemplative. It was he who introduced the others to transcendental meditiation, a practice that John is sometimes known for. He was known for being reclusive and "quiet," a term given to him by keen bussinessmen trying to categorize him and the others.
However, he was in reality quite personable and known to be the most easy-going, especially in the early days. George was an amazing guitar player. Almost all of the cool riffs you will hear in Beatles songs, the ones that will just blow you away, were done by him. He also was an extremely talented songwriter. He had his own unique style by nature from Lennon, McCartney, and later Ringo's work. Such songs as "As My Guitar Gently Weeps," "Something," "Within Without You," "Old Brown Shoe," "Here Comes the Sun," and Taxman" were all written by him. George was not extrememly prominent after the Beatles, not because he was unsuccessful, but because he resented the bussiness and its effects on people. George did however come back into the public view in the late 80s with songs like "Got My Mind Set on you" (one of my favorites. its very personal to me), "Crackerbox Palace," and "Dark Horse."
George had one son, Dhani, with his second wife, Olivia. (His first wife, Patti Boyd, divorced George for Eric Clapton in the 70s... In think. I'd have to check the date.) Olivia and George were married for around 20 years up to his death.
George Harrison, a heavy smoker for years, battled cancer for most of the late 90s. He had lung cancer and throat cancer, which was cured, but it had spread to his brain and could not be helped. George died November 29th, 2001. He was said to have approached death with acceptance, grace and even humor. He was only 58 years of age.
