Historia Gildy Baretto, dziewczyny która zakochuje sie w bogatym i przystojnym Raymundo Landaeta, młodzi pobierają się, są szcześliwi, darzą się zaufaniem, jednak na ich drodze staje matka Raymunda- Leonidas. Kobieta za wszelką cenę próbuje rozłączyć młodą parę, pomaga jej w tym Yamilex, młoda kobieta, której w końcu udaje się uwieść Raymunda. Yamilex jest z tej samej klasy społecznej co Raymundo. Gilda i Raymundo rozwodzą się, dziewczyna wraca więc do swojego poprzedniego życia, ciężko pracuje. Gilda ma siostrę bliźniaczkę Raquel, która nie pomaga jej w życiu, nie wspiera w trudnych momentach, wręcz przeciwnie cały czas wykorzystuje siostrę i podaje się za nią, dwukrotnie udaję Gildę w domu Raula, męża Gildy. Życie Gildy cały czas jest bardzo ciężkie, dziewczyna cały czas ma jakieś kłopoty, w końcu jednak u boku Raula ondajduje swoje szczeście.

Gilda Barreto's dream comes true when she marries Raymundo Landaeta, a rich and handsome young man who does not mind her poor upbringing. Their love is deep and sincere but too young and fragile to withstand the evils the couple must face at the hands of Leonidas Landaeta, Raymundo's mother. Leonidas is a selfish, arrogant and domineering woman who has different plans for her son: marry him to Yamilex, a woman of their same social level. She dedicates wholeheartedly to separate Raymundo from Gilda, using Yamilex as her accomplice. Leonidas relentless efforts to break up the marriage succeed within a short period of time, causing Raymundo and Gilda to divorce. Emotionally destroyed, Gilda returns to her former life of poverty, working hard at odd jobs to earn a decent living. Raymundo goes on a long trip abroad and upon his return home, becomes involved with Yamilex. Fate, however, has decided that Raymundo and Gilda are meant for each other. Gilda finds a way to become part of Raymundo's life once again, winning back his love and getting even with the cruel woman who so deeply and unjustly hurt her.
