SW Region Junior's Coaches Meeting

Introductions

Lake Chabot Overview with Vince Horpel
- Former coach at BHS
- Trying to start program at Lake Chabot by
hosting a varsity regatta with 2-4 teams for 2002 and program in 2002-2003
- Will contact a select number of teams about
racing in February
Race Schedule
- New 5 week schedule round-robin from Eric (BHS)
- Approved by group.
- Schedule Formula attached to minutes
Review of 2001 Southwest Championships
- Weigh-Ins - getting better
- Proposal for Stewards to buy 3-4 scales
to have ownership
- Very aggressive schedule in 2001.
- For 2002, new rules from CSUS AC
including 40 minute breaks every 4-4.5 hours.
- 115 racing slots available over the 2
day Championship
- Proposal from USRowing to have a Head
Coordinator/Parent to coordinate all the parents over the 2 days.
- Good reception for the new Awards
Ceremony
- Ideas: Publish Awards Times in attempt
to get all 3 teams there at once.
- (OS) Awards Beach proposed, but Capital
mentioned that inexperienced crews might have a problem with it. Maybe
a future project.
- Other problems:
- (BHS) Race Days were too long in the sun
- (ZLAC) Launch area was too hectic. Need a
beach master
- (SNDM) Swimming athletes and spectators
need to be abolished. Safety
- Race date for 2002 May 11th-12th
2002 Meeting Agenda
Proposal from the Stewards:
- Weigh-ins
- Weigh-ins for Lightweights and Coxswains
would be open on Friday PM from 2 PM - 6 PM and from Saturday 6 AM - 10
AM. No Sunday weigh-ins.
- For lightweights, if any member of a LT
boat does not make weight, then the whole boat needs to be re-weighed.
- Lightweight weigh-ins close at the
beginning of the first race of the day. Once racing has begun on
Saturday, no lightweights can weigh in. Coxswains have until 10: 00 AM.

Discussion:
- (SI-Abbott) Motion to limit one boat per
team per race AND a maximum of 3 races per athlete over the weekend.
ACCEPTED
- (PRC-Mees) Motion to propose a lottery to
fill up lanes in heats. The lottery would be for all 2nd boat
entries and the lottery should be equable. ACCEPTED
- (PRC-Mees) Motion to propose an exception to
the one boat per team per race limit to exempt the following races: N8B,
3V8 and V1x ACCEPTED
Open Discussion
- (PRC-Mees) Race Elimination
- Each team was asked to rank according to
preference of elimination the following events:
LT4, FR4, Int1x,
2-, Int4x, N4
Ranking from vote:
1. Int1x
2. 2-
3. Int4x
4. FR4
- Stewards will put together a new SWJRA
schedule based on the above entry restrictions and event elimination
ranking.
- (BHS-Brannigan) Motion for proposal the
investigate moving some heats from the weekend to Friday afternoon for
future SWJRA 2003 and onward ACCEPTED
- (SI-Abbott) Motion to not allow hotseating
due to time constraints DENIED
- (OS-Hooper) Motion to modify the definition
for participation in the JV4 for athletes not racing in an 8+ event DENIED
- (LGRC-Kudja) Motion to move both the heats
and finals of the LT8 to Saturday morning and afternoon. DENIED
- (OS-Anderson) Motion to move both the heats
and finals of the LT8 to Sunday morning and afternoon. ACCEPTED
- (SNDM-Hilcu) Motion to move the NA8 and NB8
heats to Saturday afternoon so Novices are not sitting around for an
entire day on Saturday. ACCEPTED
- (SI-Abbott) Motion to impose term limits on
Stewards to two consecutive terms at time, but no maximum number of years
served. DENIED
- (SI-Abbott) Motion that only High School
aged athletes compete at Championships, thus no athletes less than 14
years of age or 9th grade. DENIED
- (SI-Abbott) Motion that athletes only be
allowed to have 4 years of eligibility at Championships. DENIED
- (SI-Blevins) Motion that all teams must send
their results to www.row2k.com by the
Wednesday after race day so they are accessible to all teams. ACCEPTED
- (SI-Abbott) Motion to buy and maintain a
league-funded website. The group decided that Abbott could look into the
cost and present something to the group.
League Scheduling
- A new round-robin league schedule was
proposed by Christiani (Berkeley) Involves only the Northern teams since
the So. Cal teams already have a schedule in place
- Proposal: Over 5 weekends, all 12 teams will
have at least race each other. Each team is assigned a letter and Eric has
race schedule formula
- Weekends: Race weekends will be: 3/9-3/10,
3/16-3/17, 3/23-3/24, 4/13-4/14 and 4/27-4/28. Racing teams can decide
which day, Saturday or Sunday they would like to race as well as the race
location, i.e. Home Team.
